Pixies -Full fkn Discography ! (and loads more!)
Simply one of our favourite groups of all time! Full fucking stop!!
Pixies arrived on the “night of the living dead” mid-eighties music scene like an exocet missile! So fresh, so different, so real, so fucking great!
They were hugely influential but never attained the huge commercial success they deserved.
Their blueprint would be later ripped off left, right and centre by the likes of Kurt Cobain and a slew of horrid grunge bands, and many many groups since the death-knell of grunge.
Rather sickeningly, a lot of theses made a hell of a lot more money than the Pixies ever did! I’m surprised Charles Thompson IV, aka Black Francis, isn’t in court every day of the week suing slews of shitty bands!!
Pixies made music far ahead of its time. A mixture of scud missiles, Beach Boys, Francis Bacon, Ramones, buzzsaws, Jonathan Richman, surf babes, the Velvets, snuff flicks, Beefheart, Luis Bunuel, Iggy, the Scream, Mamas and Papas, Old Testament whackos, Johnny Thunders, Beatles, martian movies, Hendrix, Van Gogh, David Lynch, Chuck Berry, Tijuana hookers, Jerry Lee Lewis and Motorhead! Brilliantly fucked up! Brilliantly creative!
Anyway, here are some amazing albums, the official studio LPs plus EP, a great single, a load of compilations and many rare bootlegs!!
Get downloading now motherfuckers!
The Pixies’ history began when undergraduates
Joey Santiago and
Black Francis (born Charles Thompson IV) shared a room at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Santiago soon introduced Francis to the music of David Bowie and 1970s punk rock, and the pair began to jam together. Francis then embarked on a student exchange trip to San Juan, Puerto Rico, but upon arriving struggled to grasp the Spanish language.
After spending six months in an apartment with a “weirdo, psycho, gay roommate”,[11] he returned to Boston and dropped out of the university. The two spent 1984 working in a warehouse, with Francis composing songs on his acoustic guitar and writing lyrics on the subway train.
The pair formed a band in
January 1985. Bassist
Kim Deal joined Santiago and Francis two weeks later after responding to a classified ad Francis had placed, seeking
a female bassist who liked both folk music icons Peter, Paul and Mary and the hardcore punk band Hüsker Dü.!
Deal was the only person to respond, but arrived at the audition without a bass guitar as she had never played the instrument before. She claimed her twin sister Kelley Deal had a bass back in Dayton and that she had no money to get it. Francis lent her $50 for the airfare and Deal returned with the bass guitar. The trio started rehearsing in late 1985 in Deal’s apartment, “because the old lady upstairs couldn’t hear.”
After recruiting Kim Deal, the band tried to get Kelley to join the band on drums unsuccessfully. Kim’s husband suggested they hire drummer
David Lovering, whom Kim had met at her wedding reception.
They arrived at a name after Santiago selected the word randomly from a dictionary and took a liking to the definition, “mischievous little elves”. The group was originally named “Pixies In Panoply” (“Things on Fire” was considered), but soon shortened it to “Pixies”.
Once the band had settled on a name and stable line-up, they moved rehearsals to Lovering’s parents’ garage in the summer of 1986.
Their first show—named as “possibly the worst gig in the history of rock” by the band—took place at the The Rathskeller, Boston, where they performed early versions of “Here Comes Your Man”, “Dig for Fire”, and “Build High”.

Come On Pilgrim is the seminal debut release from Pixies, released on the British independent record label
4AD in September 1987. The original 1987 UK release entered the UK indie album chart on October 24, 1987 (1987-10-24), spending 29 weeks on the chart and peaking at number 5.
Come On Pilgrim had no distribution in the United States when it was first released. It was unreleased in the United States until August 1988, when Rough Trade included it on their CD release of their first full-length album Surfer Rosa. At the same time, the two releases were issued on separate vinyl records by Rough Trade.
Also in August 1988, 4AD released Surfer Rosa and Come On Pilgrim on CD together in the UK. This has been the standard UK CD release ever since, only being out of print for about six months in 1998. However, subsequent U.S. CD releases have split them in two.
In 1992, Elektra Records issued Come On Pilgrim and Surfer Rosa on separate CDs in the US. After 4AD re-acquired the band’s US distribution rights in 2004, they were again released on CD separately; this version of Come On Pilgrim was the first CD release to carry the 4AD catalogue (MAD 709).
Surfer Rosa was the first full-length album by Pixies, released in March 1988 on the British independent record label 4AD.
This was the first time I’d heard them and the strange strange wonderful sound blew me away!
The album’s unusual and very odd subject matter includes references to mutilation and voyeurism. This is augmented by experimental recording, low-fidelity production and a unique drum sound that owes much to sound engineer Steve Albini. Surfer Rosa contains many of the themes present in the Pixies’ earlier output, including Spanish lyrics and references to Puerto Rico.
Because of 4AD’s independent status, distribution in the United States was handled by British label Rough Trade Records; however, it failed to chart in either the UK or the U.S. “Gigantic” was the only single taken from the release, and only reached #93 on the UK Singles Chart. Despite this, Surfer Rosa was rereleased in the U.S. by Elektra Records in 1992, and in 2005 was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America.
Surfer Rosa is often cited as a favorite of music critics, and is frequently included on professional lists of the all-time best rock albums. Many alternative rock artists, including Billy Corgan, Rivers Cuomo and PJ Harvey, have cited the album as inspirational; Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain frequently acknowledged that Surfer Rosa was a strong influence on Nevermind, and in 1993 hired Albini to produce his band’s album In Utero.

Surfer Rosa’s cover features a wonderful photograph of a topless “friend of a friend” of the band, posing as a flamenco dancer, pitched against a wall which displays a crucifix and a torn poster. Simon Larbalestier, who contributed pictures to all of the Pixies albums, decided to build the set because “we couldn’t find the atmosphere we wanted naturally.” According to Larbalestier, Francis came up with the idea for the cover as he wrote songs in his father’s “topless Spanish bar”; Larbalestier added the crucifix and torn poster, and they “sort of loaded that with all the Catholicism.”
Commenting on the cover in 2005, Francis said, “I just hope people find it tasteful.” The cover booklet expands on the theme, and features photographs of the flamenco dancer in several other poses; there are no song lyrics or written content, apart from album credits, in the booklet. Albini’s name does not appear on the original record sleeve.
The booklet’s photographs were taken in one day at a pub opposite the 4AD offices, because, according to Larbalestier, “it was one of the few places that had a raised stage”. In an 1988 interview with Joy Press, Francis described the concept as referring to “a surfer girl,” who “walks along the Beach of Binones, has a surfboard, very beautiful.” When questioned about the topless element, Francis replied “For the first record, I told them I liked nudity. I like body lines – not necessarily something in bad taste, didn’t even have to be female, just body lines… like that Obsession ad, you know?”
According to Melody Maker, the album was originally entitled “Gigantic,” after Deal’s song, but the band feared misinterpretation of the cover and changed it to “Surfer Rosa.” The “name” of the cover woman, and the album title, comes from the “Oh My Golly!” lyric, “Besando chichando con surfer rosa.”

Pixies – Doolittle – 1989
Released April 18, 1989
Recorded October 31, 1988 – November 23, 1988 at Downtown Recorders in Boston, Massachusetts and Carriage House Studios in Stamford, Connecticut
Genre Alternative rock
Length 38:38
Label 4AD (UK)
Elektra (US)
PolyGram (Canada)
Producer Gil Norton
This magnificent LP blew my little mind when it first came out! I played this so much the fucking record player broke!
Doolittle, the second studio album, was released in April 1989 on 4AD. The album’s offbeat and dark subject material, featuring references to surrealism, Biblical violence, torture and death, contrasts with the clean production sound achieved by the then newly hired producer Gil Norton.
Doolittle was the Pixies’ first international release, with Elektra Records acting as the album’s distributor in the United States.
The Pixies released two singles from Doolittle, “Here Comes Your Man” and “Monkey Gone to Heaven,” both of which were chart successes on the US Modern Rock Tracks chart. The album itself reached #8 on the UK Albums Chart; an unexpected success for the band.
In retrospect, album tracks such as “Debaser,” “Wave of Mutilation,” and “Hey” are highly acclaimed by critics, while the album, along with Surfer Rosa, is seen as the band’s strongest work.
Doolittle has continued to sell consistently well in the years since its release, and in 1995 was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America. The album has been cited as inspirational by many alternative artists, while numerous music publications have ranked it as one of the most influential albums ever.
A 2003 poll of NME writers ranked Doolittle as the second greatest album of all time.
“As Loud As Hell” by Simon Larbalestier, from the Doolittle cover booklet. The image references lyrics in “I Bleed”.
A hallmark of Pixies releases – and indeed anything on the wonderful 4AD label – is the beautiful artwork! Doolittle was the first album where Simon Larbalestier, the Pixies’ cover photographer, and Vaughan Oliver, the band’s cover artist, had access to the lyrics. According to Larbalestier, this “made a fundamental difference.” The availability of the lyrics allowed the art and photographs to be more closely tied to the content of the album; the cover references the themes in “Monkey Gone to Heaven,” and depicts a stuffed monkey, with a halo and the numbers five, six and seven above it.
The surrealist and abstract images throughout the album booklet are linked to the album’s content. “Gouge Away” is represented by a picture of a spoon containing hair, laid across a woman’s torso. “I Bleed” is referenced with the image “As Loud As Hell;” the image shows “a ringing bell,” with a set of teeth; this references the line “it shakes my teeth.” “Walking with the Crustaceans” is a visual representation of “Wave of Mutilation”‘s lyrics. Larbalestier later commented that he was interested in “early Surrealist stuff” at this time.
During the recording sessions, Whore was discarded as a potential album title, after Oliver changed the cover artwork idea to a monkey and halo cover. Francis later explained his rationale for the move:
“ I thought people were going to think I was some kind of anti-Catholic or that I’d been raised Catholic and trying to get into this Catholic naughty-boy stuff. [...] A monkey with a halo, calling it Whore – that would bring all kinds of shit that wouldn’t be true. So I said I’d change the title. ”
Francis then named the album Doolittle, from the “Mr. Grieves” lyric “Pray for a man in the middle / One that talks like Doolittle.” This was in the tradition of previous Pixies albums; both Come On Pilgrim and Surfer Rosa used song lyrics for the album title.

Reviews of Bossanova were generally positive. Q’s Mat Snow, in his September 1990 review of Bossanova, said “the Pixies are masters of the calculated incongruity,” and commented that “they give other rockers an object lesson in the first principles of how it should be done.”
NME noted that the album’s production “leans towards the harsh garage grunge of Surfer Rosa, although the songs retain the strong melodies of Doolittle,” and said that “Bossanova is the composite Pixies LP.”

With a title meaning “fool the world”, perhaps Pixies were trying to tell the world something! They had been around a number of years but had not achieved any significant commercial success – despite the endless critical plaudits. Furthermore, internal relationships in the group had already turned volatile and sadly this would be their final studio album.
Trompe le Monde is the Pixies’ fourth and final full-length studio album, released on September 23, 1991 through the 4AD record label. (It was released simultaneously in the USA on 4AD/Elektra, although the 2004 USA CD re-issue is solely on 4AD.) After the surf-pop of Bossanova, the album saw a return to the abrasive sound of the band’s early albums, even incorporating two songs, “Subbacultcha” and “Distance Equals Rate Times Time”, pre-dating their debut.
The album name comes from the title of the first track, “Trompe le Monde”, a French phrase meaning “Fool the World”. Unlike previous albums, the title of the album comes from the name of a song (rather than a song lyric), and is a play on the French phrase “trompe l’oeil” — a painting technique in which the painter fools the viewer into thinking objects presented are real.

Pixies – Pixies (2002)
This official release is often nicknamed “The Purple Tape”, though it is missing the tracks from
Come On Pilgrim. It contains the previously unreleased “Rock A My Soul”.
The Purple Tape is the name given by fans to the Pixies’ original 17-track demo tape, recorded at Fort Apache Studios in March 1987 by Gary Smith, due, quite simply, to its mostly purple appearance. Eighteen tracks were recorded in the session; a cover of Larry Norman’s “Watch What You’re Doing” was cut from the final tape. Eight of the tracks were released in 1987 as the band’s debut, Come On Pilgrim and the remaining nine were released under the title Pixies in 2002 by Sonic Unyon records.

Wave of Mutilation: Best of Pixies was released in May 2004 alongside a companion DVD featuring a live show, promotional videos and two documentaries.
This CD replaces 1997′s compilation Death to the Pixies in 4AD’s catalog, which previously served as the label’s “greatest hits” collection for the Pixies. While most fans agree that Wave of Mutilation is a more thorough compilation, some prefer the earlier disc, as it is remastered, while the newer compilation is not. Wave of Mutilation is volume-adjusted though, providing for a slightly more modern sound than 4AD’s original Pixies CDs.
