An excellent EP from the short-lived and, sadly long-defunct Dublin-based four-piece Luggage.

Luggage had been around a few months before they completed their line-up in early 1994 with the addition, on bass, of Rachel Tighe – formerly of great Dublin band Into Paradise (who we really liked back in the day and who we’ve posted here on numerous occasions! … check Into Paradise)

The band’s broad-ranging sound spanned abrasive R&B to comical torch ballads laced with punk guitar, all with a post-modern sensibility!

The lyrics were well written and somewhat tongue in cheek with topics ranging from ghosts to science fiction, to kitchen sink drama to glum glamour, love, life and the after-life!

Influenced by a range of diverse musical styles, but most by post-punk, they had a distinctive sound which variously called to mind acts like Mark E. Smith’s The Fall, Pere Ubu, Devo or John Cooper Clarke – all excellent touchstones. But Luggage put their own touch on the sound, and with clever and witty lyrics, plus tight playing, were able to create something unique and special!

The Meantime EP was the band’s first release and was released as a joint venture by Dublin labels Blunt and Independent in October ’96.

The group soon after released the excellent follow-up four-track, “Comica Life” EP, which saw light of day at the end of November ’96.

On the live front Luggage supported Pulp, Edwyn Collins and Gallon Drunk, amongst others.

The band also recorded a couple of BBC Peel Sessions.

Luggage released an album comprised of their first two EPs together with 4 brand new songs in 1997.

Without the arrival of much deserved commercial success, the band called it a day soon after.

Alas, another lost great Irish band!

Some details on these rarities:

Tracks 1-5 come from the “Under The Water” album. These tracks were omitted on the US version – already posted here – see link below. “Going Home” appears to be a different mix.

Track 6 can be found on the “Change” 12″ EP. Unreleased music from a recording session for the song “Under The Water”.

Tracks 7-9 are available only on the “Burns My Skin” CD/EP .

Tracks 10-11: are available only on the “Angel” CD/EP.

Tracks 1-6: were ripped from Serge’s original LPs.

Tracks 11 “Sleep” is the same version than the one on “Down All The Days”except that it’s a longer mix and, in my opinion, the Definitive one!

Before their unfortunate demise, Dublin band Into Paradise realeased two magnificent mini albums, both released on Irish indie label Setanta;

• Down All The Days (Setanta SETLPM7, 1992)
• For No One (Setanta SETLPM8, 1993)

Both albums illustrate a maturity in the band’s songwriting and performance. A style fully of their own.

Both are very fine works.

Sadly neglected works.

This was Into Paradise’s most successful album, their major label debut and Adrian Borland produced ‘Churchtown‘ from 1991.

I had this on the stereo non-stop when it first came out!

I saw the band play at a few great gigs in Dublin too around this time.

Man, music meant so much to me back then. Music and beer and pussy! Now, it’s mainly beer and pussy!!

On this great album, named in honour of the Dublin suburb of Churchtown from where Dave Long hails (as does his mate Shane O’Neill from Blue in Heaven), the group sound fully energised on invigorating tracks like “Rain Comes Down” and “Bring Me Up.”

Churchtown is characterised by large-scale dramatic sweeps supported by strong, attractive melodies that kept even slower tracks like “I’m Still Waiting” vibrant.

Dave Long spills his heart out over 12 tracks that are filled with rawness and power.

The album brings to life a catalogue of fascinating and resonant characters whose heart and soul are pained, rapt with confusion, desperation, obsession.

The killer opener “Rain Comes Down” is a tour-de-force that soars high into the ether. A true classic.

Other highlights in this great LP include “Winter” an epic track which finds Long screaming “Why Can’t I Just Love You” – a standard enough lyric until you’ve heard it expressed in this song! This guy’s hurt and he’s letting you know all about it !!

“Angel”, one of the two singles released from the album, is a great example of a tight band playing at their peak.

The album ends with “Gently Falls” which explores a young woman’s suicide. Nice! As an end to the album it certainly packs an emotional punch, but don’t play it when that new chick you’re dating comes over for the first time and your intentions are, naturally, naughty! It could really spoil the mood!

Not a bad song to be heard here! A dark, real, brooding, melodic work. Magnificent!

I bought this CD in Houston a few years back at a time that I had a radio show. This CD was always on the show because every single song was being asked by the fans and because every single song sounded great and could have been a hit. From the first song “Rain Comes Down”, to the last one, this band sound a lot like the best of a mix of U2/Radiohead/Pink Floyd but different and even better!! (that is a lot to say no?).

“Yesterday’s Men” has also a great guitar base and lirics. “I am still waiting” is a slow song in the Pink Floyd/Radiohead vein.

Other highlights are “Burn my skin” and “Tears in your eyes”. I do not know anything about this band, except that this CD should be fully exposed and loved by past and new fans.

Great songs, great sounds, great singing and playing!! what more could one ask?

Into Paradise were a great group from Dublin who mixed post punk edginess /angst with dollops of pure pop to create a rather unique and wonderful sound.

I was a big fan of the group back in the day. Back even when they were known as Backwards Into Paradise!

The band first formed in 1986 and went by the Backwards Into Paradise handle until1988.

The name Backwards Into Paradise was a reference to the great band Blue in Heaven, also from the same leafy suburb of Dublin, Churchtown.

The original line up included songwriter Dave Long and Rachel Tighe.

They released the single Never The Same / She Is Close on Snap-Owl Records in 1986.

This work was described in Irish music mag Hot Press as sounding like “Knocking On Heaven’s Door all speeded up”!!

Backwards Into Paradise also appeared on two compilations released by Comet. Comet was a marvellous little Dublin record store wherein I wasted hours and hours sifting through oceans of great second-hand and new records, and wasted lots of money too!

I first heard Backwards Into Paradise on Capital, the great pirate station that existed in Dublin at the time and which blasted out wonderful, obscure indie music most of the day! I was immediately hooked!

In 1989, after changing their name to Into Paradise, they released the ‘Blue Light‘ EP in 1989 on the newly formed independent Irish label Setanta.

The line up then was Dave Long (Vocals, Guitar), Rachel Tighe – no relation to the mad Capt Tighe from Galactica! -(Bass), James Eadie (Guitar, Keyboards) and Ronan Clarke (Drums).

The Blue Light EP was selected as single of the week in the Brit music mag NME in June 1989. Back then, NME was a highly respected music journal (not the rag it now is) and being single of the week there was a huge accolade for any band. Especially bands from Ireland, as it was immensely difficult then to become known in the UK – a huge indie music market compared to the tiny pond of Ireland.

Top Irish indie DJ, (well, he was that back then – far from it now!) Dave Fanning – whose show was, in those days, a music diamond amongst the morass of Irish Radio and unmissable for indie kids like myself – played the great track I Want You from this EP regularly on his evening show through the summer of 89.

I saw Into Paradise play live on numerous occasions in small clubs across Dublin – and also on two occasions in tiny towns out in the wilds of Ireland! – during this time. Their live shows, in the spirit of punk / post-punk, were aways highly energised, edgy, powerful affairs and in Dave Long the group had an excellent frontman who always put his heart (and blood, sweat and tears!) into the performances. A few gigs, in true rock’n'roll fashion, actually ended with fighting between band members!

Soon after their first release, in 1990 came the EP ‘Change‘ on Setanta.

Later in 1990 came the band’s first full-length album, ‘Under the Water‘, also on Setanta.

Setanta’s first taste of success came when Into Paradise received glowing reviews from the British music press for Under The Water.

A flurry of major label interest followed and Into Paradise subsequently signed to Ensign Records, while retaining Setanta head-honcho, Keith Cullen as band manager.

Later that year, Ensign/Chrysalis issued a collection called Into Paradise, in the States. This was a compilation of the Under the Water LP and the Change EP. A true fan should have this US release as well as the originals though, because of variations in the tracks.

Into Paradise followed up with their most successful album – and major label debut – the Adrian Borland produced ‘Churchtown‘ in 1991.

This was followed by two great Mini Albums;

• Down All The Days -1992
• For No One -1993

The two mini albums are excellent, especially Down All The Days which may be their best work.

All too sadly though, this great band called it a day in 1993.

They will always be remembered by their many fans.

Rachel Tighe went on to record with Luggage for a few years from 1994. I’ve got my mitts on one of Luggage’s fine releases today and will be posting it soon!

Later I recall Rachel touring as part of mad witch Sinead O’Connor’s live band.

Fucking hell!

It’s like buses. You wait 10 hours for one, and then twelve turn up! Well, that happened me in Shenzhen last week. Maybe it’s just a Chinese phenomenon!

Anyway, I was waiting ages to make a “Blue In Heaven” post. And then, suddenly now we’ve also had access to this treasure!

Yes, this project involves BIH’s frontman Shane O’Neill, and fellow Churchtown denizen, the great Dave Long (of “Into Paradise” fame).

And what’s more, we’ll also be posting some more classic albums from Dave’s wonderful “Into Paradise”!

I want the “Blue In Heaven” and “Into Paradise” revival to start NOW!

Yes, via the wonderful assistance of our friend Serge Zeni, we’ve been able to get access from Dave Long to this great Supernaut album, as well as his great works with “Into Paradise”!

It doesn’t get much better than this!

“Blue In Heaven” were a band I loved years ago as a teenager and saw live many times! I once travelled hundreds of miles (in paddyland, that’s quite far!) back and forth to Cork one day just to see them headline an outdoor gig by the banks of the Lee at a “Carling Rocks” festival, as I recall!

Yeah, my old man sure gave me a warm fucking welcome when I got back home in the wee hours, that night! So warm, I couldn’t sit down for about three days!

I also loved “Into Paradise” who, although not necessarily in terms of sound, had many similarities with “Blue In Heaven”, primary among which being the quality of the music they made, the greatness of their live shows and, most unfortunately, the lack of the success they so richly deserved.

So who are Supernaut? Glad you almost asked! Supernaut was a one-off recording project involving Dave Long and Shane O’Neill, with other collaborators including Dave Clarke and Paul McQuillan.

This sounds quite different to both “Blue In Heaven” and “Into Paradise”, and is actually a very good album. There’s a real vibrancy to the tracks which combine the raw vitality of a garage band with My Blood Valentine type soundscapes.

This album is very good indeed,somewhat of a neglected classic! Too bad they didn’t make any more records.
