Some great Albums from wonderful Oz songwriter and performer
Anita Lane, who has been involved in cutting-edge and avant-garde music for almost 30 years now!
Anita was born in Melbourne, Australia in the late 1950s and began singing and writing songs at age 16. She was a classmate with
Rowland S. Howard who would later from
The Boys Next Door and
The Birthday Party with
Nick Cave.
Lane became Cave’s girlfriend and moved to London with the band in 1980. She co-wrote the lyrics of three songs for The Birthday Party (“Dead Joe”, “Kiss Me Black” and “A Dead Song”) before they imploded in 1983.
Lane is sometimes credited as a founding member of
Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds , which was forged from the debris left behind by The Birthday Party’s demise. She had an undeniably strong influence upon Nick Cave and his work, often cited as his “muse”, although her only recorded performance with the band is a ‘cameo’ verse on the Bob Dylan cover “Death Is Not The End” from the album
Murder Ballads.
She co-wrote the lyrics of the title track to the band’s 1984 LP, From Her to Eternity, as well as the lyrics of the song “Stranger Than Kindness” from Your Funeral, My Trial. She also began to perform and record her own songs.
In the great “Ghosts… Of The Civil Dead”, soundtrack by Nick Cave, Blixa Bargeld and Mick Harvey, Anita sings on video A Prison In The Desert.
She worked with the German band Die Haut before recording Dirty Sings under her own name. She was joined on the record by Nick Cave, and Bad Seeds Barry Adamson, Thomas Wydler, and Mick Harvey, who produced.
With
Mick Harvey, Lane has recorded a series of albums that showcased the dichotomy between her baby doll voice and the sexual longing of her lyrics. These include a pair of albums of Serge Gainsbourg’s covers, 1995′s
The Intoxicated Man and 1997′s
Pink Elephants.
Harvey also produced Lane’s 1993 collection, Dirty Pearl, which compiled tracks from Lane’s work with Einstürzende Neubauten, Die Haut, as well as exclusive album tracks.
Harvey co-wrote several songs, including the UK hit single, “The World’s A Girl”. Lane’s most recent collaboration with Harvey is 2001′s Sex O’ Clock.
So we’re real happy to present some great albums from
Anita Lane – thanks to Joe le Taxi!
We already posted some Anita stuff here.
First, Anita appears on 3 tracks on the great bootleg Tom Waits,Nick Cave and-friends
Also Anita wrote the lyrics for the English language version of “Blume” from Einstürzende Neubauten‘s ‘Malediction‘ album.

The first LP of her’s I heard was the wonderful LP “Black Pearl” (posted below) which was amongst the albums of the year back in 1993!
Contained therein was the wonderful song “Blume“

‘This release is an intoxicating and addictive treat by the unique Anita Lane. Singing/speaking in equal parts Claudine Longet, Jane Birkin and Nick Cave, she inhabits these songs with melancholy resignation….’.

My name, should you know it,
remains unspeakable
Another beautiful lyrical song from Einsturzende Neubauten!
Typically avant garde in its construction and production.
Wonderful video too!
I first heard this years back on Anita Lane’s wonderful LP “Black Pearl”.
Yap, lovely Aussie Anita’s the female part of the duet! Not in the vid though! (we think the chick here is Etsuko Sakamaki-Haas, who appeared on the Japanese versoin of the song … see more below!)
Anita wrote the lyrics for this the English language version of ‘Blume’ from Einstürzende Neubauten’s ‘
Malediction‘ album.
Check more Anita here: http://www.anitalane.com/index.html
BTW … If anyone’s got some Anita albums, please let me know!
Was this called HANA in the Japanese version?!
We don’t know who wrote or performed the Japanese version though!! Maybe Maria Ozawa?!
Actually, we now know very well who wrote and performed the Japanese version, cos Joe le taxi told us!
3 Blume (Japanese Version) (4:34)
Vocals, Lyrics By [Translation] – Etsuko Sakamaki-Haas
(http://www.discogs.com/release/189289)
Etsuko’s a guest singer and we don’t know about her., alas! Seems she’s married to a German (based on the family name … Haas), probably someone with contact to the Einsturzende Neubauten. If anyone knows more, please let us know!
Here’s a page with a wonderful description of the background of the song’s lyrics (in German):

Chrysantemum
For you I am a chrysantemum
Supernova, urgent star
Astera Compositae
For you I`ll be a dandelion
a thousand flowerettes in the sky
Or just a drop in the ocean
If you know my name
don’t speak it out
it holds a power — as before
Liliacea
A lily of the valley
a flower of saron
Helianthus annus
For you I even be a sunflower
Do you hear my enlightening laughter?
another reason to cut off an ear
For you know my name, do you not?
don’t say it
For it is sacred, immovable frozen
Rosa, Anemone et Nymphea alba
I’ll even be a waterlily,
a marygold, a rose
or a little thistle
Euphorbia
a blue dahlia, a black tulip
that’s where opinions differ
the scholars disagree
My name, should you know it
remains unspeakable
and is spoken — malediction

Here’s Nick Cave introducing the great video for the great song!

It’s not that gold
It’s not gold at all
Yap, Blixa’s singing in English here on this beautiful complex ambiguous ditty.
It’s the amazing and wonderful video for the great EN song “Sabrina”.
Loadsa ghoulishness and weirdness in the vid!
And oceans of self-loathing!
Nice!
Just like your typical US pop video!!
What a dingy setting! Reminds me of a place I used to live in years ago!

It’s not the red of the dying sun
The morning sheets’ surprising stain
It’s not the red of which we bleed
The red of cabernet sauvignon
A world of ruin all in vain
It’s not that red
It’s not that red
It’s not that red
It’s not as golden as Zeus’s famous shower
It’s doesn’t, not at all, come from above
It’s in the open but it doesn’t get stolen
It’s not that gold
It’s not as golden as memory
Or the age of the same name
It’s not that gold
It’s not that gold
It’s not that gold
It’s not gold at all
I wish that would be your color
I wish this would be your color
I wish this would be your color
Your color, I wish
It is as black as Malevich’s square
The cold furnace in which we stare
A high pitch on a future scale
It is a starless winter night’s tale
It suits you well
It is that black
It is that black
It is that black
It is that black
I wish this would be your color
I wish this would be your color
I wish this would be your color
Your color, I wish

It is that black
It is that black
This seems to be a song about Germany, it’s past dark actions and how it is perceived both internally and externally.
Of course, the colours of the German flag are black, yellow, and red. For yellow, just read gold.
“A world of ruin all in vain”… reference the holocaust and the untold WWII death? “
“It’s in the open but it doesn’t get stolen” …. There is a tale told of Vlad the Impaler who left a golden cup out in the centre of the town square, and nobody stole it for fear of being, well, impaled! Vlad and Hitler ain’t a million miles apart, evil cunts both!
“It’s as black as Malevich’s square” … Of course, Kazimir Malevich is a Russian artist who painted “Black Square” (which in true post-modernism, is just what it sounds like; a fucking black square!). Of course, recent German history is as black as hell!
The song seems to be about loss of pride and a lament for that situation, how it arose and its impacts.

The music video is fascinating. Notice how certain themes are subtly revealed: being the goat and wearing horns, the horror of self-reflection, the uselessness of make-up and jewelery, and the washing of hands. The setting is a dingy restroom, an underworld where dirty things are meant to be flushed away and forgotten. There’s a lot of water, too, which to me is suggestive of the River Styx.
Why do I mention this? Because I think it it ties in strongly with the lyrics, where the flag interpretation is probably correct. The song is many things: a critique of, a lament for, and a dialogue with, modern day Germany. The name Sabrina could be a personification of the country as a motherland. Perhaps the singer (Blixa Bargeld) is treating the nation as his lover, and is describing the qualities which he feels she lacks and should strive for.
Consider all the positive things which the colors of the German flag are said NOT to stand for:
– the beauty of a sunset
– sexual consummation and procreation (i.e. stained sheets, and Zeus’ descent as a shower of gold to be with Danae)
– vital fluid, both literal (blood) and symbolic (red wine)
– golden memories and golden ages
– actual valuable gold, which would quickly be snatched if left in the open
Germany’s blackness dominates and muddies all the other colors. Malevich’s Black Square, for example, is an interesting reference. That painting is usually associated with the new order that was about to be established in the Russian Revolution of 1917. Lenin’s utopia, however, never came to be. The fact that the revolution didn’t live up to its promise might be tied to the lyric about “a high pitch on a future scale”.
As a parallel to Russia, Germany also derailed itself through the rise of Nazi ideals and the “cold furnace” of the Holocaust. Certainly, it’s no fun to carry an albatross around your neck into the post-WW2 world. How does a nation collectively atone for such a thing? Is it even possible? How can one move on with dignity rather than forgetfulness?
Those are big question with no easy answers. However, the *desire* to look for answers is important, which a song like “Sabrina” beautifully captures. When Bargeld sings “I wish this would be your color”, I like to think he’s dedicating it to Germany, with “this” referring to the song itself. Perhaps one day, the country’s colors will boldly stand for the right things.
If someone were to ask me if this is a love song, I would say yes. It’s about tough love.

So you think the great Einstürzende Neubauten are all about industrial din, screaming and banging on weird instruments made from pieces of broken factories?!
Of course not!
Here’s the beautiful love song Stella Maris originally from the album Ende Neu (“Ending New”) in 1996.
This great song — a duet between Blixa Bargeld and Alexander Hacke’s wife, singer Meret Becker — became quite famous well outside of Germany!
Here we have two great videos! The great official video for Video for Stella Maris with Meret Becker and also a wonderful live performance.

I dream I’ll meet you deep deep downThe deepest point on Earth, Mariana Trench, ocean bottomBetween Nanga Parbat, K 2 and Everest,The crest of the world, there you’ll be my banquet guestWhere nothing more can impede my visionWhen you come I’ll see you coming from the world’s marginHere there’s nothing of interestThe ruins of Atlantis justBut of you not a traceI don’t think you’re coming anymoreWe missed each other in our dreamsYou dream me, I youDon’t worry, I won’t wake youBefore you wake up yourselfAcross the ice towards the North Pole is where I’ll expect youWe’ll be standing on the axisFrom Tierra del Fuego in hard dream labour to the poleThere everything will revolve just around usThe Pole Star directly above meThis is the pole I’ll wait hereOnly I cannot see you coming from anywhere for miles aroundI’m waiting at the wrong poleWe missed each other in our dreamsYou dream me, I youDon’t worry, I won’t wake youBefore you wake up yourselfPlease, please don’t wake meOnly as long as I dream do you exist…Enlist in slumber on a shipwith course to Eldorado, that’s your homeWait on the coast, look on the horizonUntil I at last see your sails thereBut the captain is always drunkAnd mostly down below deckI can’t steer this ship in my wildest dreamsOn a riff it springs a leekIn the North Sea it then sunkAn iceberg drives me backI think I’ll be waiting for longPunt stays undiscoveredWe missed each other in our dreamsYou dream me, I youDon’t worry, I won’t wake youBefore you wake up yourselfYou dream me, I youDon’t worry, I’ll find youBefore you wake up yourselfCollared in a doze I’ll grab youAnd pull you towards meFor you dream me, I youI dream you, you meWe dream each other awake

We missed each other in our dreams. You dream me, I you.Don’t worry. I won’t wake you.

Einstürzende Neubauten – Full Discography
Industrial / Experimental
Germany
We like this great German group, and it’s not only for the fact that a guy called Ash Wednesday (what a wonderful handle … I’m jealous!) is an associate / touring member!
Yap, we do like experimental industrial Berlin music now and again!
And we do like this crowd, the falling new buildings, or Einstürzende Neubauten!
Einstürzende Neubauten have been supremely influential on numerous groups – starting with a band of the quality of The Bad Seeds and working downwards.
Of course Singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Blixa Bargeld was a member of Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds for 20 years! Prior to that, Blixa was a mamber of Cave’s earlier group The Birthday Party, which he joined in 1983.
In 2003, Bargeld quit the Bad Seeds in order to focus on Einstürzende Neubauten.

The band’s been together for almost 29 years now! Yes! Really!
On
April Fools Day, 1980, Einstürzende Neubauten made their first appearance in the Moon Club in Berlin.
Their sound has evolved down the years and aside from one extreme of cacophonous industrial din, the band have also, at a different extreme, produced many beautiful and lyrical songs.
Check this out, if you don’t believe me!! … EN – Stella Maris

Current Einstürzende Neubauten members are
* Blixa Bargeld: lead vocals, guitar, keyboards. (real name: Christian Emmerich, original member)
* Alexander Hacke: bass, guitar, vocals (also known as Alexander von Borsig, since 1980)
* N.U. Unruh: special built instruments, percussion, vocals (real name: Andrew Chudy, original member)
* Jochen Arbeit: guitar, vocals (since 1997)
* Rudi Moser: special built instruments, percussion, vocals (since 1997)
Other characters associated with Einstürzende Neubauten include;
* Ash Wednesday: keyboards, electronics (touring member since 1997, perhaps named for the Australian bush fires, perhaps for the holiday)
* Boris Wilsdorf – sound engineer
* Erin Zhu – executive producer, webmaster of neubauten.org and wife of Blixa Bargeld.
* Ari Benjamin Meyers – frequent collaborator, with Redux Orchestra and on Piano
Einstürzende Neubauten’s logo (a symbol of human with a circle in the head) is an ancient Toltec cave drawing!
