Super Audio CD (SACD)

The Super Audio CD (SACD) features two disc layers. One layer contains a standard version of the album that works on any CD player. The other layer includes high-resolution stereo and a 5.1 surround version of the recording that works on SACD-compatible DVD players and home theater systems. Both layers employ SACD’s Direct Stream Digital (DSD) encoding process that samples the music 64 times faster than CD for unprecedented fidelity.

Dark Side of the Moon, originally released in 1973, is one of those albums that is discovered anew by each generation of rock listeners. This complex, often psychedelic music works very well because Pink Floyd doesn’t rush anything; the songs are mainly slow to mid-tempo, with attention paid throughout to musical texture and mood. The sound effects on songs like “On the Run,” “Time” and especially “Money” (with sampled sounds of clinking coins and cash registers turned into rhythmic accompaniment) are impressive, especially when we remember that 1973 was before the advent of digital recording techniques. This is probably Pink Floyd’s best-known work, and it’s an excellent place to start if you’re new to the band.

The Dark Side of the Moon (titled in the 1993 CD release as Dark Side of the Moon) is a 1973 concept album by Pink Floyd. It explores the nature of the human experience, with themes such as birth, time, greed, conflict, travel, mental illness, and death.

It is considered by many fans and critics to be the band’s magnum opus, and is generally hailed as the record that defined their sound. It was a landmark in rock music, featuring radio-suitable songs such as Money, Time, Us and Them, and Brain Damage/Eclipse that also incorporate ethereal concrete sound techniques. Some critics use the album as a point of reference between classic blues rock and the then-new genre of electronic music. However, the work’s softer touches of lyrical and musical nuance are what make Dark Side stand apart from its peers. All four of the band members participated in the writing and production: David Gilmour, Nick Mason, Roger Waters, and Richard Wright. It is the first Pink Floyd album with all lyrics credited to Roger Waters. It is the third bestselling album of all time and stayed longer on the US Billboard Top 200 chart than any other album in history (741+ weeks).

Richard Wright, Pink Floyd Keyboardist (1943-2008)

The sad news has just come to us that Richard Wright has passed away.

The original Pink Floyd keyboard player lost his battle with cancer a short time ago.

Richard was an original member of Pink Floyd, and other than a brief period of departure in the early 80’s, he remained with the band throughout their history.

Richard most recently toured with David Gilmour on his worldwide On An Island tour in 2006-07.

All condolences to Richard’s family and loved ones.

This is a collection of Floyd tracks remixed together. These tracks are not repeated on any other remix collection in the same form. Like the title suggests, this ambient interpretation of Floyd tracks lives up to its name. This album was released around 1998 in limited edition. It is not found anymore anywhere since I found only limited information about it on the web, and it has no entry at Amazon.

The eight minute version of “Echoes” is quite good and much better than the one on Meddle remix with nice manipulation of the keyboards and guitars. “Sheep” is entirely mind blowing. This remixed version is hellish and menacing. Definitely a step above the other remixed version. A 16 minute version of “Another Brick in the Wall” sparkles with lots of layered sound that is tastefully done. “Shine On You Crazy Diamond” lives up to its ambient potential. “Time” is much better than the other remixed version with samples from the Pulp Fiction movie. A drum machine throughout the song with samples from “Is There Anybody Out There” is injected throughout. This is an effectual and strong ending to the disc. Definite ear candy.

A rather strange one this. Floyd apparently loved car racing!

I believe this film was produced while the boys were on a break between “Momentary Lapse of Reason” and “Division Bell.”

It’s a great insight on how they spend their leisure time. It’s incredible to think that these “mega” stars revel in an adventure such as this car race.

It’s easy to see how they gain their insight into everyday life of ordinary people. The movie has plenty of background information in the history of the race, and along the way they share their unscripted multi-cultural experiences with you.

This video would be an excellent addition to anyone’s collection who regards himself/herself a Floyd fan.

The second half and encore of the show of 16th November 1974 was recorded by BBC Radio One. However, only “Dark Side Of The Moon” – with the line “I’ve been mad for f-cking years” in “Speak To Me” removed from the mix – was broadcast, on the Alan Freeman Show on 11th January 1975.

This is taken from the original pre-broadcast master tapes including encore “Echoes”.

Celestial Voices is a brand new bootleg from Rover Records. They offer a recently uncovered lost recording from August 9, 1969.

According to a review at boot-review.com:

“The first four songs come from a recently surfaced soundboard tape of a recording made of Pink Floyd at the Paradiso in Amsterdam on August 9, 1969. The band’s set was professionally recorded with the intention of broadcast on Hilversum 3 Radio. When this tape first surfaced it was said there was a malfunction with the microphone for the vocals and the band were forced to play the songs as instrumentals. This isn’t exactly accurate because Waters does still sing in Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun, Careful With That Axe, Eugene, and in the latter part of A Saucerful Of Secrets. The vocals are present but barely audible.

“Neither the audience nor the band seems to notice this and it leads one to the conclusion that the band’s PA wasn’t malfunctioning but the radio station’s equipment was. Since the tape was unusable for the radio, Pink Floyd returned to Amsterdam the following month and be recorded by Hilversum 3 again on September 17th at the Concertgebouw, the famous The Man And The Journey tape.”

The other two shows here have both been released before. The best versions [and this is subjective] appear on the Harvested label’s BBC Archives 1967-1969: Revision A.

The versions of both these shows [May 12, 1969 and June 25, 1968] on the Celestial Voices boot are equally brilliant. The show at the Paris Cinema in London on May 12 precedes the Malaysian riots by one day. The last tune played that day was called The Narrow Way. It’s chilling how that can describe the political fortunes of both Malaysia and Singapore.

This period of Pink Floyd was also their most liberating with all four members equally in charge and contributing. By the time Dark Side Of The Moon was made, Roger Waters was in control.
