Ryan Adams – Bedhead Vols. 1 & 2 (a.k.a. Live Is Hell)
An amazing collection of the best of the manifold Adams boots!
Adams, although sometimes capable of greatness (e.g the sublime Jacksonville City Nights – one of the best albums of the past deacade) produces output that is voluminous but however of variable quality.
Plus Adams is a bit of a tosser in real life (from what we read!)
Regardless though, he is an amazing songwriter. One of the best of his generation.
Welcome to Hard Hitting Songs … To start things off, here is the first installment of the amazing Ryan Adams bootleg-series Bedhead.
Torrents for these can be downloaded from the Ryan Adams Archive, but these files are either flac or shn files, and not tagged. I have converted them to mp3s (192 kbps) and tagged them… just for you
Enjoy!

Will you walk right up With a smile on your face Or will you cower in fear In your favorite sweater With an old love letter
I wish you would I wish you would Come pick me up Take me out Fuck me up Steal my records Screw all my friends They’re all full of shit With a smile on your face And then do it again I wish you would
When you’re walking downtown Do you wish I was there Do you wish it was me With the windows clear and the mannequins eyes Do they all look like mine
You know you could I wish you would Come pick me up Take me out Fuck me up Steal my records Screw all my friends behind my back With a smile on your face And then do it again I wish you would
I wish you’d make up my bed So I could make up my mind Try it for sleeping instead Maybe you’ll rest sometime I wish I could
Ryan Adams & The Cardinals performing “Come Pick Me Up” on the Letterman show.
This song, written by Adams and Van Alston, appears on the Heartbreaker LP (2000), his debut solo album.
Adams is a frustrating character. Hugely talented and able to produce records of inherent greatness – such as some of the Whiskytown albums (esp. Stranger’s Almanac) and some solo stuff such as Jacksonville City Nights – but just as often, dull MOR songs and albums.
He prizes the fact that his output is voluminous … but more does not necessarily mean better! Often the opposite, in fact!
Also, he really does try way too fucking hard to be a “real” rock n’roll star!! … Ryan, you ain’t Keef Richards … nor shall you ever be!
Saying that, he has written some mighty songs.
And here are live versions of some of these great tracks here posted by the excellent berkeleyplace
I couldn’t find something for V, so I figured I’d throw in Dancing With The Women at the Bar. This is Ryan Adams’ version of the song originally recorded by Whiskeytown, from one of my favorite albums ever, “Stranger’s Almanac.” I recommend you all buy it now.
I’ll be in my basement room with a needle & a spoon and another girl can take my pain away
“Dead Flowers” is a sublime song written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards for the Stones’ classic 1971 album Sticky Fingers.
Recording on “Dead Flowers” began on December 15, 1969 at the Muscle Shoals Sound Studio in Alabama.
According to some interpretations, the song is about a man whose girlfriend left him and because of his sadness turns to drugs to make him feel better:
“ Well when you’re sitting back in your rose pink Cadillac, making bets on Kentucky Derby Day, I’ll be in my basement room with a needle and a spoon, and another girl can take my pain away ”
“Dead Flowers” is said to refer to heroin and there is much reference in the lyrics to the needle and spoon – paraphernalia common with heroin use.
The song is notable for its use of the Stones’ core members each playing their respective instruments, with Ian Stewart on piano and singer Mick Jagger taking up acoustic guitar.
The song appears on Sticky Fingers (1971), Ladies and Gentleman: The Rolling Stones (1974) and Stripped (1995).
The track is rolled out at many Stones gigs! The Stones actually performed the song during their A Bigger Bang Tour at Louisville’s famed Churchill Downs, in reference to the line from the song “… making bets on Kentucky Derby Day..”.
A live cut from their 1994 Voodoo Lounge Tour can be found on the 1995 live album Stripped.
The song is durable and has been covered by many artists ranging from the sublime (Townes Van Zandt, Steve Earle, etc.) to the ridiculous (Poison, etc.)!
Artists by whom the song has been recorded, include the following:
* Guns N’ Roses bootleg unplugged album * GG Allin, on The Troubled Troubador (released in 1996). * Gilby Clarke, on Pawnshop Guitars (released in 1994). * Steve Earle, on Shut Up and Die Like an Aviator (released in 1991) and Ain’t Ever Satisfied: The Steve Earle Collection (released in 1996). * The Good Brothers, on The Good Brothers Live (released in 1980). * Henry McCullough, on Cut (released in 2000). * The Karl Hendricks Trio, on Buick Electra (released in 1992). * New Riders of the Purple Sage, on Live Austin, TX 06/13/1975. * Nine Pound Hammer, on Mulebite Deluxe (released in 2005). * Poison, on Poison’d (released in 2007). * The Powder Kegs, on The Seedhouse (released in 2007). * Michael Stanley, on The Farrago Sessions (released in 2006). * Townes Van Zandt, on Roadsongs and Abnormal.
One of Townes Van Zandt’s versions of the song is included on the soundtrack to the film The Big Lebowski.
You can download this song as part of the great Sticky Fingers … as well as loads of other Stones stuff … HERE
Two great versions of this majestic song on video are coming up below!

We do love Ryan. Though quite an obnoxious git betimes, in real life, his music has always been of a high quality. But fuck real life! we only care about music here! We don’t even care about our own real life. Not sure we even have one!
Ryan Adams had claimed in 2002 to have written and recorded enough songs over the previous few years to fill a four-CD collection – and that’s in addition to his acclaimed 2001 breakthrough Gold.
Wisely, Adams decided to skip the box set and issue a sort of “best of” compilation comprising 13 unreleased demos.
Recorded at four different studio sessions in Nashville, Los Angeles, and Stockholm, with a cast of musicians that includes his road band the Pinkhearts, Gillian Welch, David Rawlings, Ethan Johns, Chris Stills, Bucky Baxter, and Greg Leisz, Demolition proves that Adams is a great talnt.
When he’s good, he’s very good: the rousing country-rocker “Hallelujah,” the brooding acoustic ballads “Dear Chicago” and “Tomorrow,” and the jangly power-pop number “Gimme a Sign” are as fine as anything on Gold. But Adams sometimes lapses into mimicry, as he does on “Nuclear” and “Starting to Hurt.”

All my life, I’ve been locked into the darkness, with a gun to my head, trying to find a peaceful song.
The great “Peaceful Valley” is the best track from Ryan’s best album, the magnificent Jacksonville City Nights.
Jacksonville City Nights is, most sadly, a truly neglected masterpiece. If I say that it is veritably Dylanesque in it’s scope and quality, there is no greater accolade I can pay.
“Peaceful Valley” is a dark, complex, beautifully written, song by Adams calling upon powerful imagery, at times Old Testament in nature, to describe the intense existentialist and moralistic struggles of the protagonist. This, above a beautiful plaintiff melody that meshes perfectly with the power of the lyrics.
There is a sense of humour in the song too and, all in all, the lyrics come across like a mix of Charles Bukowski, T. S. Eliot and the Book of Job!
Here are two live performances of this wonderful track.
Lord take me on
To the peaceful valley
Down the winding river
To your city of souls
I’ve grown so tired
And my heart’s grown heavy
To walk any longer
To your cities of gold
All my life I’ve longed for forgiveness
But I can never seem to get enough
All my life I’ve been locked into the darkness
With a gun to my head
Trying to find a peaceful song
Trying to find a peaceful song
To sing when everything goes wrong
Till the peaceful valley calls me on
Up there in the clouds
In that glorious kingdom
Tell me there ain’t nothing but an easy recline
Can I still smoke my cigarettes and have my coffee
Up there in heaven with a bottle of wine
Cause all my life, I’ve longed for forgiveness
But I can never seem to get enough
All my life I’ve been locked into the darkness
With a gun to my head
Trying to find a peaceful song
To sing when everything goes wrong
Till the peaceful valley calls me home
Oh take me home to the peaceful valley
Down the winding river
To your city of souls

I’ll miss those nights at the bar
With every girl all loaded like freights
And the pain in the morning comes as easy as it goes
Can’t find the truth in a house of lies
And you can’t see tomorrow with yesterday’s eyes
One shot, one beer and a place where nobody cries
One more kiss ‘fore I go
One more night and day
Breath all heavy and slow
One shot, one beer and a kiss before I go
This is a great quality soundboard recording of a great Adams show with the Cardinals.
Ryan’s in sit down mode and the treatment of old and new songs by the full band is quite brilliant. The sound quality too is excellent making this truly a five star recording in all respects.
This is one of the very best boot recordings I’ve heard of Adams. Be amazed at the quality of Ryans’ performance, of the band’s playing, of the recording itself.
Of course the material is mostly the cream of a very large and impressive repertoire. Along with some great covers by Lenny Cohen, Gerry Garcia etc.
Best of all are some great tracks from Ryan’s best album, the magnificent Jacksonville City Nights.
Difficult to see how this boot could be surpassed. First class!
Here’s a clip from this show, the wonderful “Peaceful Valley”;

Ryan Adams- Olympia Theatre – Dublin, Ireland, November 28, 2002
Here’s the much maligned Ryan Adams at the Olympia Theatre, in Dublin on November 28, 2002.
I really don’t understand the sea of anti-Adams sentiment out there – mostly by assholes who’ve never even heard his records! I mean, rather insanely, he gets less credit than his evil cretin namesake, that purveyor of muzak for lifts, Brian Adams!
Young Ryan may apparently be somewhat of a twat in his personal life (so fucking what?) but he is a great songwriter. You don’t believe? Well then start by checking out the magnificent Jacksonville City Nights by Ryan Adams & the Cardinals from a few years back. It’s truly Dylanesque – and no greater compliment can be paid.
This a solo Ryan show by the way and the songs are stripped-down and slower. And, Ryan talks . . . a lot! That’s fine too though! Much of it is interesting – especially where he talks about his encounter with Bob Dylan.
We also get a Beth Orton cover and a guest appearance by his mate Mr. Malin!
