Robert Forster – Did She Overtake You

One of my favourite tracks from Robert’s marvellous 2008 Evangelist LP, the beautiful, ambiguous and minimalist Did She Overtake You.

Stunning art from Mr F.!

by SeauDePhoto

Did she overtake you, as you stalled to wait for her friend

And was there a circus that she saw had hoped for and left

Did she overtake you, or bemuse you, with how hard she’d push

And then surprise you, or were you not ready enough

And then out-angle you, or did you play dumb pretending you knew

That one day she’d make it without you

That one day she’d make it beside you

That one day she’d make it without you

Another stunning piece by the great suzi9mm

It really does capture the ghoulishness of the turgid dumb SNF movie and the turgid dumb Bee-Gees title track!

Well every fucking ghoulish Bee-Gees track really!!

No, it’s not actually about that bullshit!! Suzi says;

Why do i keep smiling at the title?? it’s saturday night as i decided to post this hence the title popped into my head and suddenly it seemed to fit the photo in some twisted way. i was first gonna name this “B class horror” or something because i think i’ve seen a scene like this 248 times in a horror movie. or something like it anyway.

i took this on thursday just after i saw `loiden‘s please don’t be afraid, which would btw be a fitting title for this too, i think. so i got inspired and i was gonna take some pictures with $Moonbeam13 anyway and she agreed to do this along with my other ideas so here it is. i wonder if the neighbors heard her screams…P

look at her, poor girl.

and before you say it, i’ll do it for you: “the blood is too light/dark/dry/wet/liquid/red/orange/green/bloody” )
and before you ask, i use artificial blood that i buy from a theatre supply store. more info in my journal [link] )

The Jesus and Mary Chain – The Power of Negative Thinking:

The Jesus and Mary Chain – The Power of Negative Thinking:
B-Sides & Rarities (2008 BOX)

From a group that blew our little mind back, and who we obsessed about back in the eighties with their wonderful raucous cacophonous sound which seemed to come from nowhere, the marvellous JAMC.

They opened new music worlds to us that led us to explore the influences on their sound, most prominently The Velvets, but also various punk bands – Stooges, Ramones, Television etc – and the avant-garde scene – John Cage etc. Not forgetting pure pop such as the Beachboys etc.

They in turn would go onto inspire wonderful groups such as the Pixies, Nirvana, Mazzy Star and countless more.

Here we get a trmendous collection of 80 chronologically ordered tracks!

http://www.myspace.com/thejesu…..desandmore
http://www.thejesusandmarychain.org/

In addition to being one of the U.K.’s most influential alternative rock bands, The Jesus And Mary Chain were also among the most prolific. Along with their five landmark Blanco y Negro albums (all recently remastered and reissued by Rhino), the band produced a steady stream of inspired non-LP material, now compiled in one sonically walloping 4-CD boxed set, Rhino/Warner’s THE POWER OF NEGATIVE THINKING: B-SIDES & RARITIES.

Presenting 80 chronologically ordered tracks, the box writes a parallel history of The Jesus And Mary Chain, covering every phase of the group’s history from their 1984 debut single for Creation Records (“Upside Down” b/w “Vegetable Man”) to their final Sub Pop releases in 1998.

The project was produced in cooperation with JAMC founders Jim and William Reid. Packaged in a 63 x 103 gatefold shell, the new four-disc set includes fresh interviews with the Reid brothers, rare photos and an 183 x 243 double-sided poster featuring a hand-drawn “family tree” tracing JAMC’s evolving lineups on one side and artwork from many of the band’s singles on the other.

B-SIDES & RARITIES builds on the 1988 compilation Barbed Wire Kisses, which was comprised of 20 obscure tracks; all but one of those recordings is included on the new box, which also features hard-to-find cuts from their post 1988 output and eight never-before-heard sides. This massive noise-pop bounty blends non-album tracks revealing some of the band’s most fascinating work, including demo and acoustic versions of well-known favorites, oddball covers, revelatory Reid originals and more.

The box opens with the discovery “Up Too High,” a Darklands-esque song Jim and William committed to cassette in 1983. Other previously unreleased recordings include an alternate version of “Never Understand,” demos of “My Little Underground” and “The Living End” and the unheard song “Walk And Crawl” (all circa Psychocandy), as well as a trio of Stoned And Dethroned-era recordings: an alternate take of “Coast To Coast,” a demo of “Dirty Water” and the lost song “Till I Found You.”

The Jesus And Mary Chain remain one of the most important U.K. bands of the last quarter century. Formed in East Kilbride, Scotland in 1983, the group created a new intersection of noise and pop, draping curtains of guitar feedback over melodies worthy of The Ronettes or The Beach Boys.

In listing JAMC’s 1985 debut Psychocandy among its “500 Greatest Albums Of All Time,” Rolling Stone called the work, “a decadent alt-rock masterpiece of bubblegum pop…drowned in feedback.”

With brothers Jim and William Reid as its, JAMC went on to influence countless alt-rockers to come.

After disbanding in 1998, JAMC re-emerged at 2007’s Coachella Music & Arts Festival. They subsequently embarked on a world tour, and a new album is in the works.

DUKE ELLINGTON & JOHN COLTRANE

A wonderful document of the summit meeting of two giants of jazz, recorded by Rudy Van Gelder at The Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, September 26, 1962.

This great collection begins with a remarkable performance of “In A Sentimental Mood.” Ellington’s chattering, bell-like accompaniment sets off Coltrane’s fulsome, rhapsodic interpretation in sharp relief. For Johnny Hodges–one of Duke’s main men, and an early employer of Coltrane–“In A Sentimental Mood” was a showpiece.
The Rabbit practically owned the tune, and yet Hodges considered Coltrane’s to be the finest version of the song he’d ever heard.Which indicates how deeply rooted in the jazz and blues tradition Coltrane always was.

DUKE ELLINGTON & JOHN COLTRANE represented an opportunity for Trane to step back and reflect upon the elemental lyricism and swing that were at the heart of even his most adventurous flights–and to silence those nay-sayers who were carping about how his band with Eric Dolphy was “anti-jazz.”

“Take The Coltrane” offers up one of Duke’s great vamp tunes, and illustrates just how well the master knew how to accommodate Coltrane and play to his strengths, gently prodding him into fresh melodic directions. with its insistent bluesy hosannas and tart, off-center harmonies, “Take The Coltrane” is an improviser’s delight, as the pianist offers elegant harmonic contrasts to Trane’s backwoods preacher.

“Big Nick” is Trane’s tip of the hat to tenor man and raconteur Nick Nicholas, a tipsying, elusive little melody with a hint of Sidney Bechet (and Hodges) that allows the saxophonist to range up and down his soprano.

The remainder of the repertoire is from the Ellington/Strayhorn songbook, beginning with Duke’s infectious minor blues, “Stevie.” Ellington treats his keyboard as a mini-orchestra, and Coltrane rides Sam Woodyard’s backbeat into the sun. Strayhorn’s “My Little Brown Book” opens with a bell-like fantasia between piano and Elvin Jones’ cymbals, as Coltrane demonstrates a variety of refined ballad inflections.

“Angelica” offers an infectious Afro-Cuban dialogue between Ellington and Woodyard, and an earnest, fervent Coltrane who doesn’t rise to the tune’s humor the way a Sonny Rollins would, but when Aaron Bell seats that 4/4 in the bass…look out. “The Feeling Of Jazz” is just that, closing things out with a classic blues that shuffles happily between swing and a hard rock.

Tracklisting

1. In a Sentimental Mood 4:12
2. Take the Coltrane 4:40
3. Big Nick 4:25
4. Stevie 4:20
5. My Little Brown Book 5:20
6. Angelica 5:56
7. The Feeling of Jazz 5:30

Robert Forster – Demon Days

The greatest track from Robert’s marvellous 2008 LP, The Evangelist, the beautiful, haunting, powerful lament Demon Days.

Demon Days was co-written with the late great Grant Mc Lennan. All too sadly, this song would be the last song the pair wrote together.

Grant died very shockingly aged only 48, on 6 May 2006 at home in Brisbane.

We miss you Grant! But we’ll always have your wonderful music.

https://i0.wp.com/www.beggars.com/intermission/media/mclennan.jpg

Robert dedicates the entire album, and most poignantly this track, as well as “Let Your Light In, Babe” and “It Ain’t Easy” (also co-written with Grant), in honour of his longtime friend and song-writing partner in one of the best bands of all time The Go-Betweens, the late great Grant Mc Lennan.

Although Demon Days was written well before Grant’s death, rather strangely and surreally, it has the feel of being a powerful portent of that shocking future event.

It’s difficult to listen to. But it’s also a fitting tribute to Grant’s greatness.

In these demon days
We’re pulling our pay
The lights on the hill
Are freezing us still
The fingers of fate
Stretch out and take
Us to a night
But something’s not right
Something’s gone wrong

The half whispered hopes
The dreams that we smoked
Puffed up and ran
As only dreams can
Dreamt by the young
Sparks to be sung
In places so bright
But something’s not right
Something’s gone wrong

Ennio Morricone – Ennio Morricone Cronicles (1999, 10CD-BoxSet)

Ennio Morricone – Ennio Morricone Cronicles
Japanese release ,1999
10CD-BoxSet,
Mo3 / 256~320 kbps

A rare and wonderful find this!

From a limited limited edition of 1,000 copies, here are 10 CDs containing some unbelievable music from the maestro!

Here we find lots of stuff one would not associate with Ennio – remakes and improvements to US pop classics etc.

That’s almost 300 individual tracks! So put down that bottle of Chianti and get downloading now motherfuckers!!

This box is a must for the Morricone fan, especially those unfamiliar with the pop recordings for BMG/Ricordi that he arranged, conducted, and/or composed from 1959 until the early 1990’s.

https://i0.wp.com/www.music-matters.org/sanderlog/uploaded_images/EnnioMorricone08-739189.jpg

The 10-disc set is broken down thematically, although the impressive book is completely in Japanese, except for the title listings and the lyrics, which are in both Japanese and Italian.

Before shelling out the big bucks for this set, however, go purchase the Pop Music volume of Bear Family Records’ CANTO MORRICONE set. Although only a tiny portion of this box set is represented on the CANTO collection (Mina’s SE TELEFONANDO, etc.), it gives a good overview of his early career.

There are very few remakes of US pop songs, although the few that are present typically surpass their American counterparts with regard to arrangements, the best being a cover of the Shangri-Las’ “Dressed In Black” entitled “Non e mai tardi”.

It will take some close scrutiny to figure out the reasoning behind the set’s layout, but the first disc appears to be songs arranged, composed, and conducted by Morricone, while subsequent discs cover each of the areas idividually.

There are Italian songs by Peggy March and several by Chet Baker (plays and sings). Others include Miranda Martino, Catherine Spaak, Rossi, Jimmy Fontana, and Rita Monico.

Film music is included as well, with the 10th disc devoted entirely to his Western scores for Leone and others. The set also includes an exact facsimile of the 45″ “Go-Kart Twist”, which is also on the 6th disc.

The only drawback to the set is a lack of an English or Italian translation for the Japanese book.

There are many tracks that I’m very curious about but can’t read the copious annotations given for each individual song.

Regardless, it’s still a great set for those Morricone fans like myself who wanted something meatier after purchasing the CANTO MORRICONE volumes.

Grab it now before it’s out of print (limited edition of 1,000)!!

Robert Forster – Special Instore Gig – Brisbane 26 April 2008

Robert Forster – Special Instore Gig
Rocking Horse Records
Brisbane
26 April 2008
The lights on the hill are freezing us still
The fingers of fate stretch out and take us
Promoting the release of the long awaited solo album from Robert Forster, the sublime “The Evangelist” and giving the world premier of tracks from the LP, Robert played a special instore gig at Rocking Horse Records in Brisbane on 26-04-08!

Robert was accompanied by the great bassist/singer, and one time Go-Between, Adele Pickvance!

They were in fine form, playing 3 tracks from The Evangelist and 6 fabulous Go-Betweens tracks!

The great GBs resource, stripedsunlight.blogspot was on the spot to capture this great moment in video and audio! We are deeply grateful ! He says:

I managed to record the proceedings on a camera with which I videoed the gig and extracted the audio.I missed the beginning of the first song and the 4th song all together. The video is not the best quality, I may post a song or something if there’s enough interest.

Oirish Otter!

Here’s an Oirish Otter … or by their technical name, Oirishus Otterususus.

In fact, some of the human genus, Homo Drunkus Oirishus, are said to have descended from the Oirishus Otterususus.

Take Bono, for example, who retains the sliminess and insane arrogance often associated with the fabled Oirishus Otterususus.

In Otterish – a precursor to the Oirish language – the little lad’s saying;

Shur be-gorrah, tis a lovely little drop of the hard stuff I do be havin every fookin morning for me breakfast, thank god.

Makes livin with the fookin missus almost bearable.

Whack for me daddle-oh, there’s lager in the fookin jar, oh!

Waiter! ….. Waiter!! ….. Hurry up with me next fookin jar, will ya! Fair fookin play to ya!

Go away Bono, ya fookin slimy bollox!

Get the fook AWAY Bono!!

Sarah Palin on Saturday Night Live with Katie Couric !

“You don’t have any lifelines!!”

More Mad Tales from the Grandpa & Moose-Momma ticket ©

This is fucking amazing! The mad bimbo moose momma on SNL !

Really! It’s her!

Well almost!

What’s fucking scary is that they didn’t have to write much original material!! Just copy the wonderfully surreal and hilarious events that ensued when then mad bimbo moose was let loose on NBC last week with Katie Couric!

So this moron who’s never been outside of the North America continent (yes, never!) is an expert on all things international because Alaska is the breadth of a sea away from Russia?! Very scary!

I guess GW Bush was an expert on all things international too because Texas is close to Mexico!

This nazi bimbo makes GW Bush look clever!

How the fuck is the Grandpa & Moose-Momma ticket © (yes, actually we have copyrighted that term!!) still flying high in the polls?

Wake up folks! This whackjob potentially is only a Grandpa Heart-Tremor away from being President of the USA.

Yeah, that’s PRESIDENT motherfuckers!

Or for those of you with Palin IQs, PRES … I … DENT !

Yes, that’s good. Yes. Yes. Break it down into three words! They’re called syllables.

Say them slowly and then stick them together!

No, not silly-bibbels!!

What does it mean? Well, it means “Big Boss of all the World“.

Yes, the world is a little bigger than America!

And yes, the world is a little bigger than Alaska too!

Don’t dream of voting Republican (for this and a million other reasons!)

Don’t even have a nightmare about it!

Every morning, when Alaskans wake up, one of the first things they do, is look outside to see if there are any Russians hanging around.

Tina Fey returned to Saturday Night Live to reprise her widely hailed impersonation of Alaska Governor Sarah Palin.

The sketch mocks Palin’s recent interview with CBS News’ Katie Couric (played on SNL by Amy Poehler), touching on Palin’s trip to New York and her comments about Russia and the financial bailout.

Some highlights!!

POEHLER AS COURIC: “On foreign policy, I want to give you one more chance to explain your claim that you have foreign policy experience based on Alaska’s proximity to Russia. What did you mean by that?”

FEY AS PALIN: “Well, Alaska and Russia are only separated by a narrow maritime border. (using her hands to illustrate) You got Alaska here, this right here is water, and this is Russia. So, we keep an eye on them.”

POEHLER AS COURIC: “And how do you do that exactly?”

FEY AS PALIN: “Every morning, when Alaskans wake up, one of the first things they do, is look outside to see if there are any Russians hanging around. And if there are, you gotta go up to them and ask, ‘What are you doing here?’ and if they can’t give you a good reason, it’s our responsibility to say, you know, ‘Shoo! Get back over there!’

POEHLER AS COURIC: “Senator McCain attempted to shut down his political campaign this week in order to deal with the economic crisis. What’s your opinion of this potential 700 billion dollar bailout?”

FEY AS PALIN: “Like every American I’m speaking with, we’re ill about this. We’re saying, ‘Hey, why bail out Fanny and Freddie and not me?’ But ultimately what the bailout does is, help those that are concerned about the healthcare reform that is needed to help shore up our economy to help…uh…it’s gotta be all about job creation, too. Also, too, shoring up our economy and putting Fannie and Freddy back on the right track and so healthcare reform and reducing taxes and reigning in spending…’cause Barack Obama, y’know…has got to accompany tax reductions and tax relief for Americans, also, having a dollar value meal at restaurants. That’s gonna help. But one in five jobs being created today under the umbrella of job creation. That, you know…Also…”

POEHLER AS COURIC: “What lessons have you learned from Iraq and how specifically, would you spread democracy abroad?”

FEY AS PALIN: “Specifically, we would make every effort possible to spread democracy abroad to those who want it.”

POEHLER AS COURIC: “Yes, but specifically what would you do?”

FEY AS PALIN: “We’re gonna promote freedom. Usher in democratic values and ideals. And fight terror-loving terrorists.”

POEHLER AS COURIC: “But again, and not to belabor the point. One specific thing.”

(several seconds of FEY and POEHLER staring at each other)

FEY AS PALIN: “Katie, I’d like to use one of my lifelines.”

POEHLER AS COURIC: “I’m sorry?”

FEY AS PALIN: “I want to phone a friend.”

POEHLER AS COURIC: “You don’t have any lifelines.”

FEY AS PALIN: “Well in that case I’m gonna just have to get back to you!”

Live from New York!!

Here’s an earlier skit involving Moose-Momma!

Former cast member Tina Fey, now the star of “30 Rock,” returned to Saturday Night Live to play Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin for the premiere of the show’s new season.

Fey bears a striking resemblance to Palin and nailed the candidate’s distinctive accent. Fey and Amy Poehler opened the show with a joint appearance as Palin and Hillary Clinton.

The two politicians addressed the ugly issue of sexism in the campaign!
