Mack Rice / Wilson Pickett – Rare performances of "Mustang Sally"

One of these early mornings, you gonna be wiping your weeping eyes.

“Mustang Sally” is a classic R&B / Blues song written and first recorded by Mack Rice in 1965.

The song gained much greater popularity when it was covered by Wilson Pickett the following year.

As well as becoming a staple for strippers’ playlists, the song was again resurrected in the public consciousness with a cover by fictitious band the Commitments in the awful film of the same name from 1991.

According to music historian Tom Shannon, the song started as a joke when Della Reese’s band leader wanted a new Ford Mustang. Mack Rice called the early version “Mustang Mama,” but changed the title after Aretha Franklin suggested “Mustang Sally”!

“Sir” Mack Rice (born Bonnie Rice on 10 November 1933, in Clarksdale, Mississippi), has written numerous other songs too, a number of which have been successfully covered by other artists.

Some of his better known works include “Respect Yourself”, “Betcha Can’t Kiss Me (Just One Time)”, “Cheaper to Keep Her”, “Money Talks”, “Cold Women With Warm Hearts”, “Do the Funky Penguin, Pt. 1”, “It Sho Ain’t Me”, “Santa Claus Wants Some Lovin'”, among others.

“Mustang Sally.” remains his best known composition though and his only hit as a solo performer.

Rice began his work in the R&B field in the 1950s based out of Detroit, performing with the Five Scalders in 1956 and with the Falcons from 1957 to 1963.

He performed as a solo vocalist in the years to follow, but his biggest successes were as songwriter for other artists on labels like the famous Stax Label and others in the 1960s and the following decades.

Rice is still living in the Detroit area and is still performing!

The Mack Rice version made it to #15 on the U.S. R&B charts in 1965, while Wilson Pickett’s version hit #6 in the R&B and crossed over to #23 in the Pop charts in 1966.

The song has since become a staple of R&B bands all over the world almost becoming to R&B what “Stairway to Heaven” is to rock!

During the 80s, many guitar store employees put up humorous “No Stairway to Heaven” signs to discourage the daily onslaught of twats playing the song and, in that vein, John Lee Hooker‘s Boom Boom Room has had a sign on the stage for more than a decade that says, “No Mustang Sally!

This great song has been recorded or payed live by numerous quality artists the likes of Muddy Waters, Rufus Thomas, Buddy Guy, Sam & Dave, Albert Collins, Los Lobos and Solomon Burke. It has also been played at live gigs by Bruce Springsteen.

In 2004, Rolling Stone ranked the song #434 in their list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

“Mustang Sally” by Mack Rice

Mustang Sally, think you better slow your mustang down.
Mustang Sally, think you better slow your mustang down.
You been running all over the town now.
Oh! I guess I’ll have to put your flat feet on the ground.

All you want to do is ride around Sally, ride, Sally, ride.
All you want to do is ride around Sally, ride, Sally, ride.
All you want to do is ride around Sally, ride, Sally, ride.

One of these early mornings, oh, you gonna be wiping your weeping eyes.
I bought you a brand new mustang ’bout nineteen sixty five
Now you come around signifying a woman, you don’t wanna let me ride.
