Mogwai – Young Team
Released 21 October 1997
Recorded MCM Studios, Hamilton, Scotland
Genre Post-rock, instrumental rock
Length 64:31
Label Chemikal Underground, Jetset
Producer Paul Savage, Andy Miller

Mogwai Young Team was recorded in Summer 1997 at MCM Studios (now known as Chem19 Studios) in Hamilton, Scotland, and was produced by Paul Savage and Andy Miller.

The album features extreme dynamic contrast between quiet and loud, a technique which Mogwai are well known for. It is largely instrumental, with one notable exception (“R U Still in 2 It”). It features limited instrumentation, consisting mainly of guitar, bass and drums, although other instruments can sometimes be heard throughout the album, such as glockenspiel (“Tracy”), piano (“Radar Maker”, “With Portfolio”, “A Cheery Wave from Stranded Youngsters”) and flute (“Mogwai Fear Satan”).

When questioned about his opinion on Mogwai Young Team, Mogwai guitarist Stuart Braithwaite said:

“ The album was a total disaster. We were young and naïve and had too little time. We should have said; “No, the record isn’t done until six months later.” Instead, we sat and mixed whole nights and felt bad. We didn’t talk to each other. When the album was released, we just wanted to forget everything. We were certain that all critics would pan it, honestly. After that, we understood that we had think stuff over that we recorded.”

Mogwai drummer Martin Bulloch has also given his thoughts on the album:

“ The recording of Young Team was fucked up. There were quite a lot of sketches going on. I think the whole of the first LP is angry. It was the mood of the whole thing – there was a lot of anger about.”

The LP also features a track written by the boy from the Arab Strap, Falkirk’s own Aidan Moffat!

Despite the members of Mogwai’s negative opinions about the album, Mogwai Young Team was listed as #97 on Pitchfork Media’s Top 100 Albums of the 1990s, and is considered their best by many listeners, including Kele Okereke of Bloc Party, who cited Mogwai Young Team as the record that changed his life.

Aidan John Moffat: I Can Hear Your Heart

Aidan John Moffat: I Can Hear Your Heart

A concept album of sorts from the former Arab Strap man.

Aidan Moffat is a man of many identities. Together with Malcolm Middleton, he formed the post-folk indie band Arab Strap until the end of 2006.

From 2005 on, Moffat has also recorded a few solo albums as L. Pierre (Lucky Pierre); using his own full name, Aidan John Moffat, he will soon publish I Can Hear Your Heart, an extraordinary project that is part book, part album.

Last but not least is Aidan Moffat & The Best-Ofs, bringing band members Stephen Jones and Stewart Henderson (ex-Delgados) to Crossing Border.

Malcolm Middleton – A Brighter Beat (2007)

The image “https://i1.wp.com/ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/413pLTwB7GL._SS400_.jpg” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.Malcolm Middleton – A Brighter Beat (2007)

The follow up to 2005’s ‘Into The Woods,’ ‘A Brighter Beat’ is the former Arab Strap star’s first release since the break up of the Scottish indie kings.

Middleton has created a reflective, at times brooding yet ultimately uplifting record which cements his reputation as one of the foremost songwriters of a generation, showing elements of Elliott Smith and Nick Cave whilst retaining his unique sound and style. Includes the single ‘A Brighter Beat.’

Fuck It, Malcolm, I Love You !!

Malcolm Middleton, one half of scottish indie legends Arab Strap, has gone solo and produced an absolute classic!

Unlike Graham Coxon who has let his talents fade since he left Blur,Middleton seems to have improved on Arab Strap with this collection of ten folky-gothic songs about passing time and the inevitablility of death.

Before anyone starts to think its all doom and gloom, there is a rich vein of caledonian humour throughout this album,in fact bittersweet is a good description.

The pace is even and brisk throughout with some piano led slower tunes and one or two horn driven pop classics!

Malcolm Middleton – Sleight Of Heart (ex Arab Strap) 2008)

Malcolm Middleton – Sleight Of Heart (Mar 2008)

Falkirk’s finest writer of songs about stuff like wanking on a Friday night while your ex girlfriend fucks your best friend, M and M is back!

The demise of Arab Strap last year hasn’t stopped our anti-hero writing songs about stuff like Blue Plastic Bags!

Notable for his particularly downbeat outlook on life, ex-Arab Strap member Malcolm Middleton’s fourth solo outing ‘A Sleight Of Heart’ finds him in similarly gloomy territory.

Though it is a largely acoustic recording with only Middleton and his guitar, contributions from members of fellow Scottish miserablists Mogwai and The Delgados on piano and drums fill out the sound.

As well as original songs, Middleton includes several cover versions on this release, the most notableof which being a mellowed reworking of Madonna’s ‘Stay’.

Arab Strap – Discography (rapidshare)

https://i2.wp.com/www.aversion.com/bands/arabstrap/images/032006_arabstrap_bonus1.jpgA collection of albums from cheery Falkirk residents, the quite excellent- and now quite defunct – Arab Strap.

Some say they sound very depressing but please remember one important thing. They come from fucking Falkirk, the gloomiest place in all of Scotland, the gloomiest country on this or any other planet!! (only kidding lil Scotties … Edinburgh is fairly OK … sometimes!!)

I spent five minutes in Falkirk once and almost wanted to eat a razorblade sandwich! Nuff said!

Actually, they’re not depressing at all. in fact, their stuff is often hilarious.

The good news is that, despite the splitting of the ways, the two boys have since gone on to release solo albums. I’ll upload those soon too.

Anyway, here be the comedy stylings of Pop Idol winners, Arab Strap!

Big thanks to radiobutt.blogspot.com for the studio albums and to scotsraindog for the live stuff!!Allah be praised and may your first camel be a baby camel!
