Paul McCartney talks about Bob Dylan – The McCartney Dylan love-in!

Macca’s smarter than we thought!

He talks about his respect for the living musical artist he admires most, “genius, great poet” Bob Dylan.

However, Macca says that, were dead artists to be considered, Elvis Presley would be tops!

Erm, was Elvis some sort of “genius, great poet” too? We missed that! Realistically, is Elvis in the same fucking league as Dylan? (Rhetorical question! If an answer were required, it’d be “no fucking way”!)

No mention of John Lennon by Macca here, of course!!

Anybody know anything about the source of this interview?

thanks mc27

The Complete Million Dollar Quartet (1956) – Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Johnny Cash.

The Complete Million Dollar Quartet

The Complete Million Dollar Quartet (1956)
Artist: Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash and Jerry Lee Lewis
Genre: Rock
Label: Sony/BMG
mp3 / 191 mb

The first release of the entire 46 song all-star Jam session that took place on Tuesday, December 4th, 1956, between 4 Rock & Roll MONSTERS: Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Johnny Cash.

Yeah, I know … Throughout the years many parts from this session were released, but this one, released in 2006, is the first time the complete session is available.

This fascinating recording documents the entire session. They play each other’s songs, Blues classics, Country standards and Gospel tunes, laugh, talk shit and mostly blowing your fucking minds right out of your unworthy heads!!

In 1956, Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis and Johnny Cash spent an afternoon jamming at the Sun Studios in Memphis.

For decades, fans knew that on December 4, 1956, the four brightest stars on the Sun Records catalogue – Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis and Johnny Cash – had spent an afternoon jamming at the Sun Studios in Memphis. The session had been reported in the local press but the tapes were never released.

It wasn’t until 1981, after Sun Records was sold, that 17 tracks from the session were released by Charly Records under the title The Million Dollar Quartet.

This 47-track recording is the first time the entire jam has been released in the order it was recorded.

Certainly there’s a lot of fascinating chat and a lot of fooling around, but there are also some truly magical moments.

Presley singing Don’t Be Cruel with everyone joining in is glorious; there is the shared love of gospel songs and the obvious respect for Presley; then, at the very end, Lewis cuts loose on the piano.

A truly fascinating historic document.

Elvis Presley, Danny P. Harvey, Lee Rocker & Slim Jim Phantom – Good Rockin’ Tonight (2004)

Elvis Presley, Danny P. Harvey, Lee Rocker & Slim Jim Phantom – Good Rockin’ Tonight (2004)

Slim Jim Phantom and Lee Rocker, both of the legendary Stray Cats, as well as Danny B. Harvey of the Swing Cats present this incredible EP of Elvis’ early hits, stunningly recreated with authentic Presley vocal tracks recorded in the mid-50’s on Louisiana Hayride radio program.

Back in the 1980s, bassist Lee Rocker of the Stray Cats participated in one of the better rockabilly revival efforts of its era, the Carl Perkins live broadcast special Blue Suede Shoes, which also included George Harrison, Ringo Starr, Rosanne Cash, et al., playing alongside Perkins.

This CD sort of does the same thing for (or with) Elvis Presley, kind of — the producers have gotten hold of what they claim are the original, first-generation tapes of Presley’s live broadcasts from The Louisiana Hayride and, using digital technology, have inserted Rocker, Danny B. Harvey of the Swing Cats, and Stray Cats alumnus Slim Jim Phantom in place of Presley’s band, which was partly drowned out by the crowd and not too well recorded in any case. “Good Rockin’ Tonight” offers a very compressed Presley vocal, but “That’s All Right Mama,” “Baby Let’s Play House,” and “Maybellene” all kind of work, showing what Elvis might’ve sounded like working with musicians who were doing more (and this is meant as no slight against Scotty Moore or Bill Black) than making up the music as they went along — rather, these are real virtuoso musicians who’ve got the advantage of 50 years on the participants.

The songs are all startlingly good, though a bit busier than Elvis’ real sound of this period was.

Also, it’s impossible to tell how Presley would have liked the current musicians’ approach to this music, or altered his own contribution; he was very much his own producer, with definite ideas from his first day recording at RCA (if not earlier) about how he wanted each song to sound. Still, as entertainment it works here, as an eerie hybrid of two rockabilly sounds separated by half a century but linked by the same inspiration. And the sound is awesome.

The Elvis Presley Sun Collection (1979 )

The Elvis Presley Sun Collection (1979 )
Mp3 @320 kbps

A wonderful collection thanks to bebopwino for this great post.

In 1979 RCA released this LP of sides recorded by Elvis Presley at Sun Records, Memphis, between July 1954 and July 1955.

Five classic Elvis singles were released by Sun as follows:

209 That’s All Right / Blue Moon of Kentucky

210 Good Rockin’ Tonight / I Don’t Care if the Sun Don’t Shine

215 Milkcow Blues Boogie / You’re a Heartbreaker

217 I’m Left, You’re Right, She’s Gone / Baby Let’s Play House

223 Mystery Train / I Forgot to Remember to Forget

When Elvis signed for RCA the following tracks recorded for Sun were used on his debut album: I Love You Because, Blue Moon, I’ll Never Let You Go, Just Because, and Trying to Get to You.

The sound quality on this vinyl album seems rather top heavy on the echo and reverb. For decades RCA’s treatment of the Elvis back catalogue was shabby. When the CD era arrived the original Elvis albums were re-released in the new format with no additional tracks or remastering. A CD of the Sun sides was released featuring many alternative takes, but the sound quality was pretty poor.

RCA is now taking steps to give the Elvis back catalogue the treatment it deserves. His debut album has been remastered and released with six extra tracks. More relevant to this post is the current RCA CD “Elvis At Sun” which has superb sound quality and 19 tracks including Harbour Lights, Tomorrow Night, a slow version of I’m Left, You’re Right She’s Gone, and When It Rains It Really Pours. If you call yourself a Rock ‘n’ Roll fan then this is an essential purchase for you.
Now to complete this post we present Sun single label scans from Joan K. There is a folder of scans included in the download. Thanks yet again to Joan for these visual delights!

Tracklisting

1. That’s Alright
2. Blue Moon Of Kentucky

WHY MEXICANS HATED ELVIS!

WHY MEXICANS HATED ELVIS!

By Jay Allen Sanford | Posted June 23, 2008, 4:00 a.m.

elvismex12 May 1959: While Elvis Presley’s popularity in the U.S. was arguably at its all-time peak, Mexico was in the midst of a huge anti-Elvis backlash.

Tijuana tabloids called him a racist and homosexual, after the singer reportedly told gossip columnist Federico de León “I’d rather kiss three black girls than a Mexican.” A Mexican woman in the same column was quoted saying “I’d rather kiss three dogs than one Elvis Presley.”

Mexican Radio Exitos read de León’s column over the air and spearheaded a boycott of the “insolent artist,” while the powerful student group Federación Estudiantil Universitaria (FEU) held public record burnings.

ElvisMex20 When Elvis’ movie King Creole screened in May 1959 at the Américas Cinema in Mexico City, newspapers who’d advertised the film under the title Melodía Siniestra (Sinister Melody) reported a “riot” occurring.

Mexican counterculture novelist Parménides García Saldaña wrote a short story, “El rey criollo,” about the screening where several hundred gatecrashers reportedly shredded the seats and threw lit papers onto patrons from the balcony.

“Before the film began,” wrote Saldaña, “it was pure chaos, a f-ing riot as they say more vulgarly. The different gangs shouted ‘Here the Guerrero [neighborhood],’ ‘Here the Roma’ …And then some chicks come in with leather jackets with swastikas painted on them, pony tails and bobby socks, real rock and roller like…a group of guys gang up around them [and shout] “‘Dance!’”

elvismex16 Mexican reporters suggested Elvis’ hip-wiggling and mannerisms proved he was either maricón (homosexual) or actually a woman in reverse-drag.

The movie Los chiflados del rock’n roll, a musical spoof, was promoted with posters showing Elvis in drag, being shot by rifle-toting men in sombreros, under a banner reading “Die Elvis Presley!”

The book “Refried Elvis: The Rise of the Mexican Counterculture” (Berkeley: University of California Press, c1999) claims the original Elvis quote was fabricated. According to author Eric Zolov, “Herbe Pompeyo of Polygram Records in Mexico City claims that a high-up Mexican political figure wanted to contract Presley for a private party, for which he sent the performer a blank check to fill in as he wished.

elvismex5 Presley, according to the story, returned the blank check, so the politico, extremely offended, invented the storyline about Elvis not liking Mexican women.”

elvismex4

Who could have imagined that, four decades later, Mexico would be producing more Elvis velvet paintings than any other region in the world…

elvismex3

…not to mention giving us “El Vez, the Mexican Elvis….”

Top 10: Comeback Albums

A piece below from askmen.com on the topic Top 10: Comeback Albums.

Now most of their top ten are frankly ludicrous (including joke bands such as Aerosmith, Van Halen, etc), but the top three are reasonable, and the Number One is a stone cold classic.

That stone cold classic would be the masterful Time Out of Mind by Mr Bob Dylan from 1997.

Erm, this was far from the first comeback Dylan had. What about New Morning by Bob from 1970? That was surely a comeback from the dead!

Also, why is the cover shot of Dylan from the mid sixties, when the album in question was released some three decades later?? Bob may be God, but he ain’t Dorian Gray!!

The top three on this list are described below.

Bob Dylan’s comeback album takes the No. 1 spot

Number 3

BMG

From Elvis in Memphis

Elvis Presley, 1969

OK, Elvis may never have actually left the building, but by the late ’60s his office was no longer on the throne room for “The King of Rock ‘n’ Roll.” After years of schlock films and equally cheesy soundtracks, the King’s hip shaking seemed painfully tame compared to the masses of the hippie and psychedelic set. Presley’s movies had the dubious glory of being considered a genre unto themselves, but the iconic singer hadn’t yet found a way to top his 1950’s success.

Back in action: The chance to escape from the big screen trap he’d set for himself came courtesy of the small screen. Namely a successful 1968 television special during which Elvis started to shed his big-screen persona with an off-the-cuff jam with former band mates D.J. Fontana and Scotty Moore. The vibe continued on From Elvis in Memphis, which featured a blend of country, soul and R&B that yielded hits like “In the Ghetto.” Though it was the King’s 34th record, it was widely considered his personal best and one of the greatest albums of all time. Even B-sides like “Kentucky Rain” and Presley’s final hit, “Suspicious Minds” became massive and proved that “The King” still possessed one of the most singular voices in rock and roll.

Number 2

Sony

American Recordings

Johnny Cash, 1994

Another artist with a voice like no other and a career to match — for over 50 years the “Man in Black” sold roughly 90 million albums. Lean times, personal tragedy and hard living fueled his writing, performances and private excesses. At the height of his career Johnny Cash hosted a popular television show that featured guest like Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Louis Armstrong, and Kris Kristofferson. In 1972, Cash played the Nixon White House, opting to ignore the president’s personal song requests. By the mid-’70s though, his career was flagging, and by the mid-’80s Cash had succumbed to his addiction to painkillers, again. There were records and successful books, but Cash was dropped from Columbia records. He moved to another label, but didn’t live up to earlier glories until 1994.

Back in action: Few people would think that covering Danzig and Leonard Cohen on the same record to be a brilliant move, but it worked for Johnny Cash. After the success of Cash’s version of U2’s “The Wanderer,” superstar producer Rick Rubin signed him to the American Recordings label and the two recorded a set of stripped-down covers and originals that showed fans, old and new, that Cash was far from done. It bought Cash another decade of success, a Grammy for Best Contemporary Folk Album and a prominence as a cultural icon that rivaled his earlier success.

Number 1

Sony

Time Out of Mind

Bob Dylan, 1997

Dylan never went away. He’s one of the greatest songwriters and has the hardware on his mantle to prove it: Grammys, Golden Globes and Academy Awards among them. He’s performed with virtually every major artist of his time, has been nominated multiple times for the Nobel Prize for Literature and for 20 years Bob Dylan juggled musical styles and socio/political commentary with equal grace. Along the way he survived controversies for allegedly turning his back on the folk scene by going electric and betraying the counter-culture by embracing Christianity. Things started to get patchy in the 1980s — though he was hardly out of fashion, he wrote less until he found new life as part of the Traveling Wilbury’s and ended the decade with some of his best work in years on Oh Mercy, produced by Daniel Lanois. The flash of inspiration didn’t help his next release, however, and Under the Red Sky tanked badly.

Back in action: For the seven years following Under the Red Sky, Dylan released no original material, only two albums of traditional folk songs. Time Out of Mind was his first platinum record since 1979. Not only was it considered one of his best by fans and critics, it brought the aging legend a new, younger audience, won him three Grammys and now shares a place with nine of his other records on Rolling Stone’s Top 500 Records of all time.

Elvis Tribute from Bob Dylan – "Went To See The Gypsy"

I never wanted to be a prophet or savior. Elvis maybe. I could easily see myself becoming him. But prophet? No

– Bob Dylan

Before Elvis there was nothing.

– John Lennon

Dylan apparently wrote “Went To See The Gypsy” after his first meeting with Elvis Presley.

Of course, Elvis was said to have had Romany blood from some generations back.

Several references are made in the song regarding Presley’s career move in Las Vegas, and there’s also mention of a “little Minnesota town,” a very rare instance where Dylan references his own childhood.

Outside the lights were shining

On the river of tears,

I watched them from the distance

With music in my ears.

This track is from the great New Morning album from 1970 and features one George Harrison on guitar!

Went to see the gypsy,

Stayin’ in a big hotel.

He smiled when he saw me coming,

And he said, “Well, well, well.”

His room was dark and crowded,

Lights were low and dim.

“How are you?” he said to me,

I said it back to him.

I went down to the lobby

To make a small call out.

A pretty dancing girl was there,

And she began to shout,

“Go on back to see the gypsy.

He can move you from the rear,

Drive you from your fear,

Bring you through the mirror.

He did it in Las Vegas,

And he can do it here.”

Outside the lights were shining

On the river of tears,

I watched them from the distance

With music in my ears.

I went back to see the gypsy,

It was nearly early dawn.

The gypsy’s door was open wide

But the gypsy was gone,

And that pretty dancing girl,

She could not be found.

So I watched that sun come rising

From that little Minnesota town.
