The Hoodoo Gurus – “Blow Your Cool”
Original Release Date: July 7, 1987

Hoodoo Gurus were a great Oz band, sadly now defunct.

We used to love this lot back in the day! And this is a MUST-HAVE album.

“Blow Your Cool” came at the peak of their popularity. ‘What’s My Scene’ got a lot of radio airplay and the video was fairly high-rotation too.

Since I love repetition repetition repetition …. again this one’s a great album from a great band.

There personnel on this one are; Dave Faulkner (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Brad Shepherd (guitar, harmonica); Clyde Bramley (bass); Mark Kingsmill (drums). Additional musicians on this one include the hot Susanna Hoffs, Debbi Peterson, Vicki Peterson, Michael Steele, Geoff Rhoe.

Without a doubt, this is the most gut wrenching, popped-up, agony induced CD ever produced. Sharp lyrics and driving guitars make this CD a classic. If you aren’t singing the lyrics in a mock heart-felt rendition by the 3rd listening, something is wrong with you. This is one fine, fine CD. The opening song, “Out That door” is the perfect song crying out for lust lost. What follows are solid songs that will touch your heart. Now don’t get me wrong, These are great pop/rock songs, but they, unlike most music today, have heart.

Hoodoo Gurus – “Bite The Bullet” (1998)

A great Hoodoos live album !

This 16 track live album from the now defunct Australian act was recorded on their final tour, ‘Spit The Dummy Tour’, betweenOctober 1997 and January 1998.

It includes ‘Miss Freelove ’69’, ‘What’s My Scene’, ‘Like Wow – Wipeout!’, ‘Come Anytime’, ‘Tojo’ and ‘I Want You Back’. 1998 Mushroom Records release.

If you ever saw the Gurus ( I did twice ) then you know the energy they put out live. The sound quality is powerful and clear with some great songs: Miss Freelove, Right Time, Be My Guru and songs that should have been hits in the states.

I was lucky enough to buy the directors cut version of this when it first was released (two additional cds)and it was worth the price for the second disc alone “Doppleganger” which consists of live in the studio radio broadcasts. Songs like Linda Sue Dixon, Hey Anthea, I Got A Right and Quicksand are as great as anything released on the previous studio albums and of course the definitive version of Everybody’s Got Something To Hide Except For Me and My Monkey will make you wish they hadn’t ended it all too soon…
