Jonathan Richman – I, Jonathan @ 320

Jonathan Richman – I, Jonathan @ 320

This is Jonathan Richman’s fifth album with Brennan Totten in the producer’s chair. While the production on Richman’s albums is meant to be as unobtrusive as possible, it takes an understanding ear to achieve the effect. Cut nearly live, and always maintaining a first take feel, the producer must truly be in sync with the artist to come up with engaging results such as these.

In fact, Richman generally plays a song once in the studio, and if it doesn’t work straight away he moves onto another number and comes back to it later.

This album sacrifices nothing in Richman’s trademark freshness of sound.

Highlights include “You Can’t Talk To The Dude”, another of his examinations of problematic human interactions, “I Was Dancing In The Lesbian Bar”, a remake of his wonderful “That Summer Feeling”, and the magical reverie of “Twilight In Boston”.

As always, this set is another celebration of the twin credos that less is more and honesty is the best policy.

When there’s things to do not because you gotta

When you run for love not because you oughta

When you trust your friends with no reason nada

The joy I name shall not be tamed

And that summer feeling is gonna haunt you

One day in your life.

Jonathan Richman-Because Her Beauty Is Raw and Wild – 2008

Jonathan Richman Because Her Beauty Is Raw And Wild

Jonathan Richman is one of modern music’s most innovative and consistent artists. Quite possibly too the most entertaining live performer on this or any other planet.

Some of you may know him as the musical greek geek chorus from the Farrelly brothers’ great “There’s Something about Mary”.

Yap, we love his stuff from all the ways back as far as the classic “Road Runner” from his John Cale produced seminal debut LP “Jonathan Richman & the Modern Lovers”.

With a prototype punk aesthetic, clever lyrics and a crazy sense of humour, his music since then has been consistently excellent. His live shows are great fun too!

Johnny must be some relation to Dorian Gray – he really doesn’t seem to age! Maybe he drinks the blood of Irish virgins (it useta work for me – until mores on the little sheltered cat-lick island changed and virginity, like Fionn Mac Cuchaill, became but a long lost legend, and mores were replaced by hoes!!)

This is his Johnny’s fifth release on Vapor, and his first new album in three years. Hurrah!

It features eleven new tracks, plus a new version of “Old World”.

There’s also a Leonard Cohen cover, “Here It Is”. Who’d have thunk it? Johnny and Lenny? Strange bedfellows indeed! Then again, perhaps not!

The vinyl version of Because Her Beauty Is Raw And Wild features a Bonus Track on a 7-inch Single. I look forward to downloading that one later!!
