Mary Wells – Sings My Guy (1964)

Mary Wells – Sings My Guy (1964)

I’m stickin’ to my guy
Like a stamp to a letter
Like the birds of a feather
We stick together

A seminal album this, sung by the great Mary Welles, created by the great Smokey Robinson.

On this album, Robinson demonstrated his ability to craft and hone great material for female acts, something he would later repeat with The Marvelettes.

Besides the title track, there are so many other sublime songs, such as “He’s the One I Love” and “At Last,” that weren’t hits but certainly should have been.

Of course, the marvellous Mary Wells makes these great songs sound even better!

We’ve already posted about the great title track HERE!

I believe this album was released in the UK under the handle “My Baby Just Cares For Me” in 1965. I guess Brits, back then, didn’t know what the word “guy” meant!

Nothing you could say
Can tear me away from my guy
Nothing you could do
‘Cause I’m stuck like glue to my guy

I’m stickin’ to my guy
Like a stamp to a letter
Like the birds of a feather
We stick together
I’m tellin’ you from the start
I can’t be torn apart from my guy

Nothing you can do
Could make me untrue to my guy
Nothing you could buy
Could make me tell a lie to my guy

I gave my guy my word of honor
To be faithful and I’m gonna
You best be believing
I won’t be deceiving my guy

As a matter of opinion I think he’s tops
My opinion is he’s the cream of the crop
As a matter of taste to be exact
He’s my ideal as a matter of fact

No muscle bound man
Could take my hand from my guy
No handsome face
Could ever take the place of my guy
He may not be a movie star
But when it comes to being happy we are
There’s not a man today
Who could take me away from my guy

No muscle bound man
Could take my hand from my guy
No handsome face
Could ever take the place of my guy
He may not be a movie star
But when it comes to being happy we are
There’s not a man today
Who could take me away from my guy

There’s not a man today
Who could take me away from my guy
(Tell me more)
There’s not a man today
Who could take me away from my guy

Great track by Motown songstress Wells as posted by pauleyh

This is the debut single by the one and only Mary Wells, The First Lady (at the time) for Motown.

This great track was written by Mr. Smokey Robinson!

Mary Esther Wells (May 13, 1943 – July 26, 1992) was an American soul, R&B, and pop singer.

Most famous for her 1964 hit “My Guy”, she was the first, female signature voice of Motown and its first star.
