Mogwai – Songs for Happy People
Released 17 June 2003
Recorded Cava Studios, Glasgow, Scotland
Genre Post-rock
Length 41:50
Label Play It Again Sam, Matador
Producer Tony Doogan

Happy Songs for Happy People is the fourth full-length studio album by the Scottish Mogs.

This one is a further evolution of Mogwai’s toned down, more electronic sound.

Many of the songs are awash in feedback and reverb, and most highlight their mysterious, somewhat insect-like, vocoder effect prominently.

Some listeners say the album has an apocalyptic sound; the music is often interpreted as conveying feelings of fear and sorrow. The exception comes with the final triumphant blast of cacophony on the last track, “Stop Coming to My House”.

Although a very guitar-oriented album, with drums and bass mixed low, synths often take the main stage. Strings and piano also make a few appearances.

Mogwai’s usual vocalist Stuart Braithwaite does not sing on this album at all; however, Barry Burns (“Hunted by a Freak”, “Killing All the Flies”) and John Cummings (“Boring Machines Disturbs Sleep”) do.

Mogwai – Young Team (1997)

//upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/8/83/Mogwaiyoungteam.jpg/200px-Mogwaiyoungteam.jpg” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.

Mogwai – Young Team
Released 21 October 1997
Recorded MCM Studios, Hamilton, Scotland
Genre Post-rock, instrumental rock
Length 64:31
Label Chemikal Underground, Jetset
Producer Paul Savage, Andy Miller

Mogwai Young Team was recorded in Summer 1997 at MCM Studios (now known as Chem19 Studios) in Hamilton, Scotland, and was produced by Paul Savage and Andy Miller.

The album features extreme dynamic contrast between quiet and loud, a technique which Mogwai are well known for. It is largely instrumental, with one notable exception (“R U Still in 2 It”). It features limited instrumentation, consisting mainly of guitar, bass and drums, although other instruments can sometimes be heard throughout the album, such as glockenspiel (“Tracy”), piano (“Radar Maker”, “With Portfolio”, “A Cheery Wave from Stranded Youngsters”) and flute (“Mogwai Fear Satan”).

When questioned about his opinion on Mogwai Young Team, Mogwai guitarist Stuart Braithwaite said:

“ The album was a total disaster. We were young and naïve and had too little time. We should have said; “No, the record isn’t done until six months later.” Instead, we sat and mixed whole nights and felt bad. We didn’t talk to each other. When the album was released, we just wanted to forget everything. We were certain that all critics would pan it, honestly. After that, we understood that we had think stuff over that we recorded.”

Mogwai drummer Martin Bulloch has also given his thoughts on the album:

“ The recording of Young Team was fucked up. There were quite a lot of sketches going on. I think the whole of the first LP is angry. It was the mood of the whole thing – there was a lot of anger about.”

The LP also features a track written by the boy from the Arab Strap, Falkirk’s own Aidan Moffat!

Despite the members of Mogwai’s negative opinions about the album, Mogwai Young Team was listed as #97 on Pitchfork Media’s Top 100 Albums of the 1990s, and is considered their best by many listeners, including Kele Okereke of Bloc Party, who cited Mogwai Young Team as the record that changed his life.

Tracklisting

1. “Yes! I Am a Long Way from Home” – 5:57
2. “Like Herod” – 11:41
3. “Katrien” – 5:24
4. “Radar Maker” – 1:35
5. “Tracy” – 7:19
6. “Summer” (Priority version) – 3:28
7. “With Portfolio” – 3:10
8. “R U Still in 2 It” – 7:20
9. “A Cheery Wave from Stranded Youngsters” – 2:18
10. “Mogwai Fear Satan” – 16:19

Mogwai – The Hawk Is Howling (2008)

Mogwai – The Hawk Is Howling (2008)
Genre: Post-Rock/Instrumental
Format: MP3
Quality: VBR kbps
Size: 76MB
—————
Released September 22, 2008
Recorded Chem19 Studios
Hamilton, Scotland
Label Wall of Sound
Producer Andy Miller

The much anticipated new release from Scottish post-rockers Mogwai.

I’m now totally fucking shocked! Yes, I’ve just found out Jim Morrison is dead! I need a bottle of Jack Daniels NOW!

So that really was his grave in Pere Lachaise cemetery, where I visited all those years ago! I’d partaken of a tad too much Moroccan hash that day and thought it was Morrison’s house I’d been visiting and that I’d had afternoon tea with the man himself!

Anyway, The Hawk Is Howling is the Mog’s sixth studio album and will be released on September 22, 2008 through Wall of Sound, Play It Again Sam, and Matador in the UK, Europe, and the USA, respectively.

The album was recorded in Hamilton, South Lanarkshire at Chem19 Studios with producer Andy Miller, whom the band had previously worked with on their early releases from 1997—1998.

Mogwai recorded the album from September 2007 to February 2008, mixing the album in March 08 with Garth Jones at the band’s own Castle of Doom Studios in Glasgow.

The album was recorded and produced by Andy Miller at Chem19 Studios in Hamilton, South Lanarkshire, Scotland and mixed by Garth Jones at Castle of Doom Studios in Glasgow, Scotland between September 2007—March 2008.

The album marks the first time in ten years that the band worked with Andy Miller, and at Chem19 Studios, since recording the song “Small Children in the Background” for the No Education = No Future (Fuck the Curfew) EP in May 1998.

Several new songs were debuted at a show for the Triptych Festival at Tramway in Glasgow, Scotland on April 26, 2008—”The Precipice”, “I Love You, I’m Going to Blow Up Your School”, “I’m Jim Morrison – I’m Dead”, “Thank You Space Expert”, “Batcat” and “Scotland’s Shame”.

Barry Burns described the album’s songs as being “dreamy ballads about forbidden love gone awry, one minute pointless instrumentals and … spoken word about the future of the music industry in India.

Mogwai’s sixth full-length CD The Hawk Is Howling contains all the extremity and dynamics you know and love, but with a more curious array of rhythms and melodies, hinting a bit more than previous records at both their electronic and metal influences. Additionally, with only two songs under the five-minute mark, this is maybe their most “cinematic”-sounding record to date (which is saying something).

Reissuing the brooding debut from legendary Scottish post-rock pioneers Mogwai may seem redundant to their obsessive collector fanbase, but there are treats within the second disc for devotees and newcomers alike.

‘Mogwai Young Team’ itself is considered to be one of the more influential instrumental rock albums of the 1990s, despite the fact that the band themselves have continually downplayed its acclaim.

Documenting the band at their most violent and visceral, it is a stark example of the power of dynamics with rock instruments, but shot through with moments of darkness and quiet that are chilling rather than soothing.

The second disc contains several live versions of songs from the album, as well as a rare cover of the Spacemen 3 song ‘Honey’.
