Suicide / Bruce Springsteen – Dream Baby Dream

Suicide would prove as influential as The Clash. Listening to their self-titled 1977 debut from the vantage point of late 2002, it’s all so obvious: the synthpop, techno, and industrial dance sounds of the ’80s and ’90s, and now the new New Wave of electroclash, all gesture back to that foundational album.

– Wilson Neate

A seminal track from Messrs. Alan Vega and Martin Rev, AKA the hugely influential Suicide!

With assistance from Ric Ocasek of The Cars and the inspirational figures of Englishman Michael Zilkha and Frenchman Michel Esteban (the brains behind ZE, New York’s then newest and hippest record label), the group released this famous track as the double A side single “Dream Baby Dream/Radiation” back in 1979.

The lyrics here won’t exactly win the Nobel literature prize, but the song is about much more than that and is a wonderful powerful piece nevertheless.

A song way ahead of its time, with a beautifully obsessive tone and lush, repetitive structure, Dream Baby Dream is now regarded as the classic Suicide record.

Suicide went on to be a huge influence on a slew of bands the likes of Joy Division, U2, New Order, Stereolab, Sisters of Mercy, Radiohead, The Cars and even Bruce Springsteen.

Springsteen used an interesting pared down solo keyboard version of “Dream Baby Dream” to close the concerts on his 2005 Devils & Dust Tour. See below.

Some good Suicide links:

keep that flame burnin’
keep that flame burnin’
forever

dream baby dream
dream baby dream
forever, and ever
forever, and ever

I see that smile on your face
yeah
yeah, makes you free
I see that smile
oh..

dream baby dream
dream baby dream
dream baby dream
dream baby dream
forever …

BEIRUT/ The Real People – The Joys Of Losing Weight

The Real People (later known as BEIRUT) – The Joys Of Losing Weight
2001 | lo-fi electronic/Indie/Alt | MP3 | 256Kbps | 135Mb

Do you like experimental music? Do you like songs without titles? Do you like Beirut? Do you like Lebanon? Do you like Lesbianism? Do you like loads of dumb questions? Well, then here’s the album for you, The Joy of Losing Weight by Oprah Winfrey … sorry by The Real People!

The Real People consists of, surprise surprise, one Zach Condon of Beirut fame!

Amazingly, Condon made this album at the age of fifteen! And even more amazing, or maybe not considering who made it, the album is quite good. Fifteen? …. shouldn’t he have been out behind the school bike shed sniffing glue and drinking cider with the local peroxide blond bikes instead of messing about with some downloaded studio software in his bedroom all day?

Anyway, some blurb from somewhere on the initial release of this;

“This album has never been released, is not available for sale, and has never been seen or heard by anyone other than a handful of people who have personally received a copy of this record. It pre-dates all of his work with Beirut and does not bear any influence of the Balkan/Eastern Gypsy sound that he has become renowned and critically acclaimed for; however, it’s a highly precocious album that’s steeped in amazing melodies draped against a backdrop of synthesized electronica: imagine an entire electronic/experimental album in the style of Scenic World with Zach’s distinctive vocals and the occasional appearance of his famous brass instrumentation.”

Fair enough!

So here she be, 21 tracks in all …. and no titles! Have fun and make up your own titles!

We call the first one “Flower Ozawa Biscuit Hangover”! Or maybe that’s my new GF’s name …. I can’t remember!

We found this link for this bootleg collection …. yap, nazis that means it ain’t our fucking link and this ain’t a commercial release!!

The Remote Viewer – I Can’t Believe It’s Not Better (2008)

Artist: The Remote Viewer
Album: I Can’t Believe It’s Not Better
Label: Mobeer
Release date: July 2008
Genre: Electronic
Style: Ambient Pop/Downtempo
RIYL: Epic45, The Boats, Marsen Jules

“It’s been over 3 years since the Remote Viewer’s last album “Let your Heart Draw A Line” so it’s been quite a wait – but from the instant you start playing this amazing set of tracks you find yourself comforted by the familiar yet forever beguiling sound this band makes.

Delicate percussive underlays, pops and whirrs, tinkling melodies, banjo strums, loose piano arrangements and an assortment of found sounds mingle in with deep, almost gargantuan basslines that accompany many of the Remote Viewer’s finest tracks.

There are some surprising treats in store too – with band member Andrew Johnson allowing his singing voice to be heard properly for the first time in years, while faithful family member Nicola Hodgkinson contributes some of her vocal magic to proceedings.

With packaging to die for (it took the label endless late nights to get all the elements together – more or less everything has been hand made) we’re thinking that this is one of the most beautiful and sublime releases we’ve laid our hands on in a while.” [Boomkat]

New Order – 5 great LPs Remastered (2008)

New Order – 5 great LPs Remastered (2008)

New Order melded post-punk and electronic dance, and became one of the most critically acclaimed bands of the 1980s. Though the band were shadowed by the legacy of Joy Division in their first years, their immersion in the New York City club scene of the early 1980s introduced them to dance music. The band’s 1983 hit “Blue Monday” saw them fully embrace dance music and synthesized instruments, and is the best-selling 12-inch single of all time.

Brian Eno – Pellisero Wine Promo CD [FLAC]

Brian Eno – Pellisero Wine Promo CD
2003
FLAC

A rather strange one this!

In 2003, to promote an Italian wine (Pellisero), for some reason, a promotional CD was sent to wine distributors!

Very surreal!! … Eno music never really encourages me to drink wine! Everything else does, however!

This promotional CD included 5 unreleased Brian Eno tracks.

The music sounds like outtakes from “Bell Studies” period.

Ripped in FLAC with cover scans.

Tracklisting

1) Study 16 (x5, x3, series ratios) 2:32
2) Study 17 (pythgorean ratios) 4:12
3) If a bell became a drone 2:14
4) Campion Bells 2:25
5) Bell Study with distant delay 5:22

High Places – High Places (2008)

High Places – High Places (2008)
MP3 | CBR 320k | 68 MB

Genre : Indie pop, electronic, alternative

We posted this before.

We like it!

Here it is again …. new links!

AMG Review by Tim Sendra :

Using samples, loops, found sounds, household appliances, and a highly developed sense of childlike joy and wonder, High Places create some magic on their debut full-length album. The duo of Mary Pearson and Robert Barber take a get-in-where-you-fit-in approach to their sound, splicing in elements of indie pop, electronica, world music, dub, and outer space kids music and ending up with a sound that isn’t miles away from what fellow sonic adventurers like Panda Bear or El Guincho are doing, but retains more than enough individuality and invention to be totally unique and original.

Credit Barber’s amazing ability to weave bits and bobs of noise and sound into a blipping, jerky music that soothes the ears and makes your feet want to move. It could have easily ended up a jumbled mess or a corny gimmick, instead it sounds like a thoroughly modern update on the kind of primitive music humans have been making all along. Pearson’s vocals too deserve all kinds of praise. They are unfailingly sweet without being sugary, sometimes treated and trippy but always directed straight for the heart. She gives the whirlwind of sound a stable and very human center.

Within the group’s hermetically sealed and unified world of sound there is enough variation to keep things very interesting, whether it’s stuttering dance beats on “Gold Coin,” the heavenly clouds of what sounds like bells and strings but could be anything on “Papaya Yeah,” the almost Chinese guitars on “The Storm,” or the clattering steel drums on “The Tree with the Lights On It,” Barber and Pearson show a mastery of atmosphere and dynamics without sacrificing the beauty of the melodies and the impact of the songs.

High Places’ debut lives up to the promise of their singles (and then some) and is hopefully the first of many impressive and inspiring records to come from the duo.

Tracklisting

01 – The Storm (2:48)
02 – You in 40 Years (1:28)
03 – The Tree with the Lights in It (2:41)
04 – Vision’s the First… (3:37)

08 – Golden (2:52)

Future Sound Of London – Environments II (2008)

Future Sound Of London – Environments II (2008)
Mp3 / 320 kbps / RS and multi mirror

This genus of music is really not our normal cup of Jack Daniels but we did like this lot back in the day! I think we had Lifeforms and Dead Cities and they got a lot of play!

I hadn’t heard anything about them in a while though. I thought they’d died! But apparently not!

The Future Sound of London are a prolific British electronic music band comprised of Garry Cobain and Brian Dougans. The duo are often credited with pushing the boundaries of electronic music experimentation and of pioneering a new era of dance music.

Although often labelled as ambient, Cobain and Dougans usually resist being typecast into any one particular genre. Their work covers most areas of electronic music, such as ambient techno, drum and bass, trip-hop, ambient dub, acid techno and often involves extreme experimentation; for example they have, since the turn of the millennium, experimented with psychedelic rock under their Amorphous Androgynous alias.

The artists have been fairly enigmatic in the past but have become more candid with their fanbase in recent years with social websites like Myspace, Youtube, their forum and many interviews in which Cobain almost always speaks for them both. In addition to music composition, their interests have covered a number of areas including film and video, 2D and 3D computer graphics, animation in making almost all their own videos for their singles, radio broadcasting and creating their own electronic devices for sound making.

Four Tet – Pause (2001) (@320)

Four Tet – Pause
released in 2001
MP3 / 320 kbps / 84.63 mb

Another album we liked a lot a few years ago.

Amazon.com’s Best of 2001;

Kieran Hebden is, it has to be said, something of a genius. The groundwork for Pause was laid when Dialogue–his debut solo album under the guise of Four Tet–landed in 1999, an album that redrew the parameters of inventive dance music.

A peculiar mix of live-sounding instrumental jazz and technologically super-precise laptop dance trickery, it sounded nothing like Hebden’s actual group–the post-rockers Fridge–and, as it happened, very little like anything else in existence. Where Dialogue employed jazz sax and flute in its evocation of a 21st-century jazz meltdown, Pause goes even further, coiling whispers of harp and zither over layer-on-layers of fidgeting, rattling percussion.

His inspirations? Well, like his friend and protégé:, Canadian tech-wizard Manitoba (whose Start Breaking My Heart is easily the equal of Pause), Hebden collects sounds and melodies from a dizzying array of places–ancient British folk music, the rattle of typewriter keys, the gurgle of running water, even a field recording of a children’s playground. Genius? There really is no other word for it.

A New Order classic now even better!

A whopping 18 tracks this time across 2 CDs!

The extra tracks in this version are worth the admission price alone!

Just look at the bonus disc – it contains some of their strongest-ever songs: “Everything’s Gone Green”, “Procession”, “Temptation”, “Hurt” – “Hurt”, for ****’s sake, where did THAT come from? When did you EVER hear music like that? PIL’s “Metal Box” maybe? Talk about (to paraphrase Sounds, or was it NME?) people sitting on sofas in the rain wondering where this music came from! It’s as though (with disc 2) Rhino have unearthed a lost classic New Order LP (except that you’ve heard all the songs before).

Anyway, you try following up the best LP ever made (Closer) after your lead singer’s just died and see how you get on.

Plus…the rare alternate version of “Ceremony” AND the half-hearted packaging of the London CD edition dispensed with.

Why would anyone not buy this?

Saint Etienne – Boxette (2008) (4xcd)

Saint Etienne – boxette (2008) (4xcd)
Compilation album / Box Set
Released January 21, 2008
Genre Alternative rock / Synthpop / pop
Label Foreign Office – 004

This is for our pal Reuben!

What a witty title, boxette ! Har har har!

Guess it’s better than roxette, anyway!

Despite the name, there’s 8 hours of amazing pop music here – rare stuff previously only available via their fanclub! – from the quality British group!
https://i0.wp.com/www.popboy.net-angels.co.uk/angels/artists/pictures/saintetienne_selectmagazine03.jpg

Saint Etienne are an English indie electronic pop act, fronted by lovely Sarah Cracknell (born April 12, 1967, Chelmsford, Essex) with former music journalists Bob Stanley (born December 25, 1964) and Pete Wiggs (born May 15, 1966)

They are named after the famous French football team, AS Saint-Étienne, European Cup runners-up in the 1970s.

Boxette is a 4 CD box set by Saint Etienne available for purchase only to people registered with their fan club, Lovers Unite, containing I Love to Paint (1994), Built on Sand (1999), Asleep at the Wheels of Steel (2001) and Eric Random.

The first three are remastered editions of very limited compilations of unreleased material sent out to members of the fan club over the years, while the fourth compiles songs released on various fan club EPs as well as five previously unreleased tracks.

It was released in a numbered limited edition of 3,000 with some copies hand-numbered and signed by the band.

//www.harpmagazine.com/img/news/20080305_Saint_Etienne.jpg” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.

Nothing can stop them now: A couple of months ago we brought you word that a limited edition box set from Britain’s Saint Etienne was en route via the band’s Lovers Unite club. (If you went to the Saint Etienne page you could sign up and place a pre-order for the collection.) That box set, smartly titled Boxette, issued on their own Foreign Office label, arrived on fans’ doorsteps recently—only 3000 numbered copies were manufactured, in effect creating yet another rarity—and the results are impressive to say the least, not to mention some genuine surprises. Read on….

By all rights, we shouldn’t even be having this discussion. After all, Saint Etienne—sprightly dance-pop enthusiasts, equal parts Dusty and Kylie, versed in both ‘60s girl group and ‘90s techno—had their moment in the trip-hop sun, then disappeared from view, right? Not so fast. For Etienne acolytes, and there are many of us, it’s been 18 years of quiet but passionate devotion, accompanied by scores of records, many of them very much under the radar. Such as the material at hand.

“Here are a few dozen tracks,” writes St. E’s Bob Stanley, in the extensive liner notes to the four-CD box, “which at one point were our least wanted, but in time became our most desirable.” Over the years Saint Etienne—Stanley, his mixmaster-in-crime Pete Wiggs and sultry chanteuse Sarah Cracknell—has made exclusive releases available to members of Lovers Unite, starting with 1994’s I Love To Paint. That rarer-than-hens’-teeth album, along with 1999’s Built On Sand and 2002’s Asleep At The Wheels of Steel, comprise ¾ of Boxette, and the delights are plentiful. Paint is particular is a must-hear, ordered like an early Etienne album (between-song interludes, vocal snippets from TV and film, etc.), and flashing back to the glory days of Foxbase Alpha and So Tough via choice outtakes such as jangly folk-rocker “Sushi Rider,” the dancey dubadelica of “Fife Coast” and sleek disco homage, “Everything I Touch Turns to Gold.”

Sand chronicles St. E in the latter half of the ‘90s, although it’s less cohesive than Paint, more odds ‘n’ sods in feel (but don’t miss the luminous Dusty In Memphis-goes-trip-hop gem “Keep Nothing”). Wheels of Steel covers 2001-2002 and mostly captures the instrumental side of Stanley and Wiggs. Disc 4, titled Eric Random, could also be deemed oddy/soddy, collecting everything from a 1993 cover of David Bowie’s “Absolute Beginnners” to a haunting 2002 collaboration with Vashti Bunyan titled “The Same But Different” to the 1997 fanclub-only Valentine’s Day 97 EP (the New Orderish “Departure Lounge” ranks as one of Cracknell’s most affecting vocal performances ever). But as with Paint, the dozen songs dotting Eric hold up as a satisfying, well-sequenced whole.

“How did we get this far?” croons, Cracknell, wistfully, in “Departure Lounge.” Though she was probably singing to an errant lover, the question could also be posed among the three members of St. E. Whatever they conclude, here’s hoping they keep doing it.

Fred Mills …. March 5, 2008

I Love To Paint cover
cd-1
I Love to Paint (1994)

I Love To Paint (1995) is a compilation of previously-unreleased and rare music by Saint Etienne. It was made available only by mail order to members of the band’s fan club. It is now a collectable and sought-after item, regularly selling for high prices second-hand.

* “Flight to Tashkent” is an outtake from the So Tough sessions.
* The version of “Sushi Rider” included on I Love to Paint is known to fans as “The Greener and Woodier Version,” and is different from the version commercially released on the “Like a Motorway” 7″ single.
* “Deutscher Kendals” is an instrumental recorded in 1994. “Fife Coast” was recorded at the same session.
* “Studio Kinda Filthy” originally appeared as the b-side on the “Filthy” promotional 12″ single, July 1991.
* “We’re Coming in Loaded” is a cover of a song popularized by Elvis Presley in the film Girls! Girls! Girls!
* “Fake ’88” originally appeared on a UK indie music magazine compilation disc, Volume 6, as well as Volume’s own best-of compilation Sharks Patrol These Waters–The Best of Volume Too.
* “Parliament Hill” is an outtake from the Foxbase Alpha sessions.
* “Everything I Touch Turns to Gold” features a fragment of dialogue from the Audrey Hepburn film Roman Holiday.

Regarding “Schroeder,” the CD liner notes explain, “From our Charlie Brown-obsessed period at the beginning of 1994, this is the twin brother of ‘Highgate Road Incident,’ the b-side of ‘Pale Movie.'” Schroeder, of course, was the Beethoven-adoring piano player from the Peanuts comic strip by Charles M. Schulz.

“Stranger in Paradise” is also an outtake from So Tough, and was released on the NME three-disc sampler Ruby Trax–The NME’s Roaring Forty. The original composition is credited to Tony Bennett; however, Saint Etienne also pays homage to Mudhoney by referencing the song “Touch Me I’m Sick.”

Irmin Schmidt (CAN) – Anthology: Soundtracks 1978-1993 (3CD) .. @320 kbps

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41OQtLc1WzL._SL500_AA240_.jpg

Irmin Schmidt (CAN) – Anthology: Soundtracks 1978-1993 (3CD)
Mp3 @320 kbps:
Irmin Schmidt was the leader of CAN, the hugely influential, avant-garde rock group of the 70s. He has over the past 30 years also been involved in scoring numerous films. Some of his earlier work in this field – typically eclectic and challenging – is nicely compiled here.

After the Can years the keyboardist Irmin Schmidt’s career is largely deal with soundtracks. In this 3-CD set, the best of his soundtracks are all covered.

Disc 1 is the best, “verdi prati valse” the accordian work is excellent, and other tracks “pauline”, “rote Erde”, “qui sait” and “ritas’ tune” are extremely romantic work. Other pieces are synthesizer instrumentals occasionally supported by Can’s guitarist Michael Karoli. Some works “mountain way” shows the spontaneity of Can.

Disc 2 is more 80’s feel, with lots of synthesizers and sometimes with merits, for example, “morning in berlin”, “Balance”.

Disc 3 contains his late 70’s materials which are more experimental, for example, “wallenstein”, “Messer im kopf”, etc. “Flachenbrand” is very impressive, too.

My Life in the Bush of Ghosts is a 1981 album by Brian Eno and David Byrne, titled after Amos Tutuola’s 1954 novel of the same name. The album was re-released in expanded form in 2006.

Receiving strong reviews upon its release, My Life is now regarded as a high point in the discographies of Eno and Byrne.

In a 1985 interview, Kate Bush stated the album “left a very big mark on popular music,” while critic John Bush describes it as “[a] pioneering work for countless styles connected to electronics, ambience, and Third World music.”

Everything That Happens Will Happen Today is the second album made in collaboration between David Byrne and Brian Eno, released on August 18, 2008.

It is the first collaboration between the two since 1981’s excellent My Life in the Bush of Ghosts and Eno’s work producing and co-writing with Talking Heads.

Byrne and Eno worked on creating the album – a mix of electronic and Gospel music – throughout 2007 and early 2008 over the e-mail and have used word-of-mouth and Internet sales to market the music.

Byrne will tour for this album, performing songs from both this release and from the duo’s previous collaborations, through late 2008 and early 2009.

Mercury Rev – Back To Mine
Released in 2006
Mp3 @320kbps / 142 Mb / 2 RARs
A wonderfully eclectic and excellent compilation via the boys from Rev!

Yap, this 2006 compilation was handpicked by Alternative heroes Mercury Rev and features many songs that have influenced them as well as a few current favorites.

Amongst the array of great talent here are Suicide, David Bowie, Nico, Alex Chilton, Galaxie 500, Billie Holliday and John Cale. There are also some more obscure music – including an amazing Nicolai Dunger track.

I could live without the awful Terry Jacks track though! Thank fuck for delete buttons!

And, if that’s not enough, there’s a brand new Mercury Rev track, ‘Cecilia’s Lunar Expose’, recorded specifically for this collection!

Get downloading now mofos!!

As one might expect from a band as eclectic as Mercury Rev, their late-night mixtape compilation offers a selection of style and genres, incorporating legends (Billie Holiday, George Jones, Nico, Pharoah Sanders and Randy Newman) alongside more outré talents. What’s also no surprise, given the layered approach of their early albums, is the elegant congruence of many of the segues: the opening link from Bowie’s “A New Career in a New Town” to Johan Johannsson’s “Hotel Borg”, for instance, is all about shared intent and melodic echoes, while the move from John Cale’s “Days of Steam” to Andrew Bird’s “Opposite Day” involves the subtlest of shifts from viola to violin.

The most sustained progress, however, is from the band’s “Cecilia’s Lunar Exposé”, a slice of Saucerful Of Secrets-era Floydism, through the Neu!-style groove of Spacemen 3’s “Big City”, to the erotic trance-scape of Suicide’s “Dream Baby Dream”, a beautifully modulated arc for the more ambitious musical explorers, with childlike comforts furnished by “Seasons In the Sun” and “When You Wish Upon A Star”.

Highlights :’Days Of Steam’, ‘Big City’, ‘Dream Baby Dream’, ‘Cecilia’s Lunar Exposé’

Mark Ronson – Discography

This yuppie chap’s one of those strange breed of DJs / producers who seem to create nothing themselves, only meddle about with other people’s creations, yet still achieve stardom!

Not my cup of jack daniels, really!

I don’t know much about this chappie’s “work” aside from the Bob Dylan remix thing he did last year on “Most Likely You’ll Go Your Way (And I’ll Go Mine)” which was, frankly, underwhelming to say the least!

Although Ronson’s “worked” with a few decent artists – Jack White etc- he’s worked with many many ridiculous outfits too – prime amongst which would be the king of uber-stoopid, one Robbie Williams!! Nein Danke, motherfuckers!
