"The Rumble in the Catacomb" – Insanity of Religion; Part 675

“The Rumble in the Catacomb”!

We don’t know what to say on this one! The madness of religion continues!

A brawl between monks inside what many people believe to be the most holy place on earth – the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem!

What we really want to know is who won the brawl?

Was it the Armenian monk or the Greek Orthodox monk?

Our money is on the Armenian monk. Those Armenians can be ruthless! We’ve seen them in “The Shield”!!

This fight sounds a better bout than the Joe Calzaghe points win over Roy Jones Jr. at the weekend!

Breaking news too! We believe that the lovely Don King has purchased the rights to the Jerusalem monk rematch!

The Jerusalem rematch will be on PRAY FOR VIEW !!! (yes, we have copyrighted that phrase, motherfuckers! So don’t use it! Else we’ll send round an Armenian monk to beat the shit out of you!!)

We note too that the article unquestionably states “next to the site of Jesus’s tomb“!

Not, far more accurately, “next to what some believe is the site of Jesus’s tomb”!

Not, even more correctly, “next to what some believe is the site of the tomb of a man called Jesus, who some believe once existed”!

Press Association

Israeli police burst into one of Christianity’s holiest churches yesterday and arrested two clergyman after an argument between monks erupted into a brawl next to the site of Jesus’s tomb.

The clash broke out between Armenian and Greek Orthodox monks in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, revered as the site of Jesus’s crucifixion, burial and resurrection. It began as Armenian clergymen marched in a procession commemorating the 4th-century discovery of the cross believed to have been used to crucify Jesus.

It ended with riot police separating the sides. They arrested an Armenian monk and a Greek Orthodox monk with a gash on his forehead. Six Christian sects control of the ancient church, fighting over influence. The feud revolved around a demand by the Greek Orthodox group to post a monk inside the Edicule – the ancient structure built on what is believed to be Jesus’s tomb – during the Armenian procession.

The Armenians refused and when they tried to march, the Greek monks blocked their way. Father Pakrat of the Armenian Patriarchate said the Greeks attacked first. Archbishop Aristarchos of the Greek Orthodox patriarchate denied this and said: “I’m sorry that these events happened in front of the most holy religious monument of Christianity.”

Pope Benny apologises for rape of children in Australia

https://i2.wp.com/news.sky.com/sky-news/content/StaticFile/jpg/2008/Jul/Week2/15032749.jpg

More Church insanity! Nothing ever changes!

So, creepy looking, former Nazi, Ratzy boy is on a grand trip to Oz!

Now, apparently, there could be thousands of victims of sexual abuse at the hands of Catlick priests in Oz!

Yes, that’s thousands of lives ruined by Catlick clerics! Fucking hell!

So what is the Catlick Church going to do in order to remedy the catastrophe they caused? Perhaps some of the following? … Compensations schemes for the victims? Psychological treatment for victims? De-frocking of the perpetrators? Criminal prosecution of the perpetrators? Weeding out of potential future perpetrators? Prevention schemes put in place?

Of course fucking not! That would require cash outflows from the vast Vatican coffers! That would cause damage to the Religion Industry (and it is an industry!)!

So instead, former Nazi, Ratzinger does nothing and just says “SORRY”!

Well, that’s sure to heal all the physical and psychological pain incurred by the innocents at the hands of certain Catlick clergy animals!!

There have been numerous incidents of sexual abuse like this in countless countries. The scale of the Catholic Church Sexual abuses is staggering! This abuse is most probably still going on in many places, still ruining young lives, even today!

Why has nothing concrete ever been done about this abuse? Why have serious sanctions not been brought to bear on the Church Industry? If anything remotely like this occurred in another industry, that industry would be razed to the ground and all senior officers as well as the individual perpetrators, locked up for life!!

Pope apologises for church sexual abuse in Australia

Pope sails in Sydney, hails apology
Play Vid

SYDNEY, July 19 (Reuters) – Pope Benedict apologised on Saturday for sexual abuse in the Catholic Church in Australia, saying those responsible should be brought to justice.

“I am deeply sorry for the pain and suffering the victims have endured,” the pontiff said in a homily in Sydney.

“These misdeeds, which constitute so grave a betrayal of trust, deserve unequivocal condemnation,” he said. “Those responsible for these evils must be brought to justice.”

Victims of church abuse in Australia have been calling on the pope to issue a public apology during his visit to Sydney for World Youth Day, July 15-20.

Broken Rites, which represents abuse victims in Australia, has a list of 107 convictions for church abuse, but says there could be thousands of victims as only a few cases go to court.

The pope confronted the issue of sexual abuse in the Catholic Church in the United States during a visit to Washington in April, meeting victims and vowing to keep paedophiles out of the priesthood.

Sexual abuse by Catholic clergy has overshadowed the pope’s visit to Sydney, with the church reopening a 25 year-old abuse case in Australia only days before the pontiff arrived.

Benedict said sexual abuse by clergy had damaged the Catholic Church.

“I would like to pause to acknowledge the shame which we have all felt as a result of the sexual abuse of minors by some clergy and religious in this country,” he said during a mass inside Sydney’s St Mary’s Cathedral.

“I ask all of you to support and assist your bishops and to work together with them in combating this evil. Victims should recieve compassion and care…”

Victims of abuse have said the pope must not just apologise for past church abuse but implement an open and accountable system of investigating abuse claims. They say the Catholic Church in Australia continues to try and cover-up abuse. (Additional reporting by Philip Pullella in Sydney)

The Beatles – Bigger than Jesus?

I’m one of Christ’s biggest fans

Interesting, if rather strange, piece from http://www.telegraph.co.uk/

So Lennon was really a Christ lover? He should’ve told Mark Chapman!

‘Bigger than Jesus? The Beatles were a Christian band’

By Jonathan Wynne-Jones, Religious Affairs Correspondent

John Lennon famously claimed the Beatles were more popular than Jesus, even predicting that Christianity would “vanish and shrink”.

The Beatles

John Lennon claimed the Beatles were a Christian band

But 28 years after his death, in an interview being broadcast for the first time, he claims that on the contrary, he hoped to encourage people to focus on the Christian faith.

Despite his familiar image as a hippy icon who invited us to imagine a world without religion, Lennon says he was “one of Christ’s biggest fans” and felt emotional in church.

In the interview, which was recorded in 1969 and is being aired on BBC Radio 4’s Sunday programme, he talks about the Church of England, his vision of heaven, and expresses disappointment at not being allowed to marry his second wife, Yoko Ono, in church.

The interview was conducted by Ken Seymour of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation when Lennon and Ono were at the Bed-In for Peace protest in Montreal. It was bought three years ago by National Museums Liverpool, which is playing an extract at a new exhibition at World Museum Liverpool.

Christians around the world had been dismayed by Lennon’s boast in an article in London’s Evening Standard about the popularity of the Beatles, but the singer says he was misunderstood.

“It’s just an expression meaning the Beatles seem to me to have more influence over youth than Christ,” he says. “Now I wasn’t saying that was a good idea, ‘cos I’m one of Christ’s biggest fans. And if I can turn the focus on the Beatles on to Christ’s message, then that’s what we’re here to do.”

He blames “the hypocrites” for being too “uptight” in reacting to his comments. “If the Beatles get on the side of Christ, which they always were, and let people know that, then maybe the churches won’t be full, but there’ll be a lot of Christians dancing in the dance halls. Whatever they celebrate, God and Christ, I don’t think it matters as long as they’re aware of Him and His message.”

He acknowledges a strong belief in the power of prayer but says he dislikes all the church trappings. “Community praying is probably very powerful… I’m just against the hypocrisy and the hat-wearing and the socialising and the tea parties.”

His aversion to institutional religion was shaped when a “ludicrous” vicar banned him from a church when he was 14 because he and his friends were “having the giggles”.

“I wasn’t convinced of the vicar’s sincerity anyway. But I knew it was the house of God. So I went along for that and the atmosphere always made me feel emotional and religious or whatever you call it.

“Being thrown out of church for laughing was the end of the Church for me.”

He continues: “I would have liked to have been married in a church but they wouldn’t marry divorcees… That’s pure hypocrisy.” The Church’s position on the issue changed in 2002.

On heaven, he says: “I haven’t got any sort of dream of a physical heaven where there’s lots of chocolate and pretty women in nightgowns, playing harps. I believe you can make heaven within your own mind. The kingdom of heaven is within you, Christ said, and I believe that.”

The author Paul Du Noyer, who has written extensively on the Beatles, said: “He was chastened by the reaction he got to his Jesus remarks and it probably made him think more carefully about religion.

“These comments would have been a great boost for churches if they had come out at the time.”

Suzanne J. Crawford & Dennis F. Kelley, "American Indian Religious Traditions: An Encyclopedia"

American Indian Religious Traditions

Suzanne J. Crawford & Dennis F. Kelley, “American Indian Religious Traditions: An Encyclopedia”
ABC-CLIO (2005) | 3 volume set | English | ISBN 1576075176 | 1340 pages | PDF | 6.41 MB

Fascinating stuff here about fascinating indigenous cultures of North America .

How is peyote used in Native American religious ceremonies? How do various tribes conduct the rites of birth, adolescence, marriage, and death? What is potlatch and why was its practice forbidden?

Readers will learn how religious tradition influences Native American social, political, and material culture and vice versa. This extensive work goes beyond similar surveys that focus only on anthropology and history and explores the religious practices, movements, institutions, key figures, ceremonial systems, and religious accoutrements indigenous to North America, from the precontact era to the present.

Taking a deep and informed look specifically at the religious and spiritual nature of Native Americans, the encyclopedia places traditions within their historical and theoretical context, examining their relevance within Native religious life and practice as well as within the academic study of religion.

Topics covered include key ideas and issues, religious and political leaders, primary ceremonies, mythic figures, and related cultural subjects, such as basketry, whaling, farming, and bison hunting, which have religious significance for Native peoples. Contributors include noted scholars of American Indian religious culture, including many who come from tribal traditions and can offer valuable insights and observations from their personal experience.

Dorothy Coleman, "Hume: Dialogues Concerning Natural Religion: And Other Writings" (Cambridge Texts in the History of Philosophy)

Hume

Dorothy Coleman, “Hume: Dialogues Concerning Natural Religion: And Other Writings” (Cambridge Texts in the History of Philosophy)
Cambridge University Press (2007) | English | ISBN 0511279361 | 218 pages | PDF | 2.33 MB

I once wondered about the existence of God for a minute or two.

Then I realised the dumbness of that activity, the the dumbness of the very concept and that I was totally wasting my time.

So I immediately rushed off out to the nearest nudie bar, to meet some real Gods, Jack Daniels and Pussy!

We have read Hume’s Dialogues concerning Natural Religion before and found his work quite fascinating.

This is a new edition with lots of extras and a good intro.

David Hume‘s Dialogues concerning Natural Religion, first published in 1779, is one of the most influential works in the philosophy of religion and the most artful instance of philosophical dialogue since the dialogues of Plato.

It presents a fictional conversation between a sceptic, an orthodox Christian, and a Newtonian theist concerning evidence for the existence of an intelligent cause of nature based on observable features of the world.

This new edition presents it together with several of Hume’s other, shorter writings about religion, and with brief selections from the work of Pierre Bayle, who influenced both Hume’s views on religion and the dialectical style of the Dialogues.

The volume is completed by an introduction which sets the Dialogues in its philosophical and historical contexts.

John Leslie, "Immortality Defended"

Immortality Defended

John Leslie, “Immortality Defended”
Blackwell Publishing (2007) | English | ISBN 1405162031 | 111 pages | PDF | 1.83 MB

“I intend to live forever. So far, so good.”
-Stephen Wright

“I intend to live forever, or die trying.”
-Groucho Marx

I sometimes feel immortal. That’s usually after a pint of Jack Daniels though!

Immortality is a fascinating concept however, a futile hope embedded in the human heart.

Why does the cosmos exist? Could we be parts of an infinite or divine mind, as pantheists believe? If so, might we have afterlives?

In Immortality Defended, John Leslie, renowned philosopher of religion and cosmology, defends pantheism and three distinct ways in which we could be immortal.

Combining a creation story told by Plato with the ideas of Spinoza, this book tackles the fundamental questions posed by our very existence.

It explores ‘Einsteinian immortality‘ inside an eternally existing four-dimensional whole; the nature of an infinite mind which lives the lives of everybody; and, the possibility of an afterlife inside such a mind. Its arguments are drawn from contemporary science, and from philosophy from ancient Greece onwards.

This highly original work is accessible to anyone interested in science, philosophy, cosmology or theology, or to those who are just intrigued by the wonder of our being.

Here be forever;

Robert S. Corrington, "A Semiotic Theory of Theology and Philosophy"

A Semiotic Theory of Theology and Philosophy

Robert S. Corrington, “A Semiotic Theory of Theology and Philosophy”

Cambridge University Press (2003) | English | eISBN 0511009704 | 285 pages | PDF | 4.12 MB

Not a light read, but a fascinating positing of new ways to think about theology and philosophy, taking off from the philosophies of the great Benedict de Spinoza .

I would warn you that I do not attribute to nature either beauty or deformity, order or confusion. Only in relation to our imagination can things be called beautiful or ugly, well-ordered or confused.

– Benedict de Spinoza

The concern of this work is with developing an alternative to standard categories in theology and philosophy, especially in terms of how they deal with nature.

Avoiding the polemics of much contemporary reflection on nature, it shows how we are connected to nature through the unconscious and its unique way of reading and processing signs.

Spinoza‘s key distinction between natura naturans and natura naturata serves as the governing framework for the treatise.

Suggestions are made for a post-Christian way of understanding religion.

Robert S. Corrington’s work represents the first sustained attempt to bring together the fields of semiotics, depth-psychology, pragmaticism, and a post-Monotheistic theology of nature.

Its focus is on how signification functions in human and non-human orders of infinite nature. Our connection with the infinite is described in detail, especially as it relates to the use of sign systems.

Here be philosophy;

Philippines Good Friday Crucifixions

No, this isn’t a meeting of the “Extremest Sado-Masochists Ever” club.

No, this has some bizarre tie with some ancient story in some ancient book.

What the fuck is wrong with these idiots?

There’s a post on youtube from some guy who’s apparently done this;

why sad,its a re-enactment not a cult,i went thru it the same way,the nails are smaller on this video.During my re-enactment. i had 6 inch nails thru my palm of my hands and one 8 inch nail thru both of my feet,,i hung on the cross for 48 min before i was taken down in front of a crowd of people on good friday services,i do it every other year..toungue,ear,nose piercings is a cult in my opinion. – Cruxguy

This guy doesn’t sound remotely insane, right?!

It’s not cult related, he opines, instead “toungue, ear, nose piercings is a cult (sic)” !

Listen moron, the very definition of a cult entails “ritual observances involved in worship of, or communication with, the supernatural or its symbolic representations.” So getting yourself crucified in honour of some religious character from some story in a religious book is most definitely a cult.

Not only is it a cult, more importantly it’s fucking insane!
