The Last Shadow Puppets – Standing Next To Me (Acoustic)

The Last Shadow Puppets – Standing Next To Me (Acoustic)

We’d first read about this lot ages back in Uncut Magazine but paid no nevermind, since, basically, we’re not fans of the criminally over-rated Arctic Monkeys. We’d also heard a few Rascals EPs and weren’t blown away.

Then we came across the official video for this track, Standing Next To Me, in the wee small hours of one drunken night-morning last Summer and really liked it. A fantastic sounding song, a wonderful kick back to the days of pure pop and stylish, stylised songwriting.

Trying to find out who the performers might be, we spotted that bloke from Arctic Monkeys. F*cking hell …. that can’t be that bloke from Arctic Monkeys, can it? The music’s too fkn good!

Well it was, and it is. Yap, Monkey Alex Turner along with Miles Kane of scouser group The Rascals, along with composer/producer James Ford. AKA The Last Shadow Puppets.

Next day, their great LP The Age Of The Understatement was sourced!

This LP was released on 21 April 2008 in the UK, following the release of their eponymous single in the previous week. It entered the UK Album Chart at #1 on 27 April 2008.

The album was nominated for the 2008 Mercury Music Prize but lost out to Elbow’s The Seldom Seen Kid.

The Last Shadow Puppets, The Age of the Understatement

It’s a fine collection indeed, calling to mind eclectic great influences ranging from early Beatles to Burt Bacharach to solo Scott Walker to Scott hero, Jacques Brel to Dusty Springfield to David Bowie.

Lovely cover artwork too!

This LP’s so good we may even think about giving the Arctic Monkeys another try! ….. Maybe!

We saw more details on this LP on another blog … here

The vid below has a nice acoustic version of Standing Next To Me from “Fader TV”, along with a brief interview.

Standing Next To Me was the band’s second single, released on 7 July 2008.

Want her, have her
Two years have gone now
But I can’t relate
To the never ending
Games that you play
As desire passes through
then you’re open
To the truth
I hope you understand
And your love
Is standing next to me
Is standing next to me

The one you fell for
makes it seem juvenile
And you’ll laugh
At yourself
Again and again
And we’ll drink
To the thought
She’ll remember you
Maybe tomorrow

And your love
Is standing next to me
Is standing next to me
And your love
Is standing next to me
Is standing next to me
Is standing next to me
Is standing next to me

Want her, have her
Two years have gone now
But I can’t relate
To the never ending
Games that you play
As desire passes through
Then you’re open
To the truth
I hope you understand

And your love
Is standing next to me
Is standing next to me
Is standing next to me
Is standing next to me
