Nick Cave & Kylie Minogue & The Pogues – Death is not the End

A very interesting star studded cover of Bob Dylan’s great “Death is not the End”, originally from his much maligned, but actually decent 1988 LP Down in the Groove.

‘Death Is Not The End’ was covered by Nick Cave – an artist who has always been heavily influenced by Bob Dylan – with the Bad Seeds in 1996 on the Murder Ballads LP.

The Cave version featured several vocalists, such as Anita Lane, Kylie Minogue, PJ Harvey, and Shane McGowan, including Nick Cave himself and Bad Seeds drummer Thomas Wydler and guitarist Blixa Bargeld.

They each sing a verse – strangely the only song the only song on Murder Ballads where an actual death does not occur!

art by 666Glass666

Death is not the End

When you’re sad and when you’re lonely and you haven’t got a friend
Just remember that death is not the end
And all that you’ve held sacred, falls down and does not mend
Just remember that death is not the end
Not the end, not the end
Just remember that death is not the end

When you’re standing at the crossroads that you cannot comprehend
Just remember that death is not the end
And all your dreams have vanished and you don’t know what’s up the bend
Just remember that death is not the end
Not the end, not the end
Just remember that death is not the end

When the storm clouds gather ’round you, and heavy rains descend
Just remember that death is not the end
And there’s no one there to comfort you, with a helpin’ hand to lend
Just remember that death is not the end
Not the end, not the end
Just remember that death is not the end

Oh, the tree of life is growing
Where the spirit never dies
And the bright light of salvation shines
In dark and empty skies

When the cities are on fire with the burning flesh of men
Just remember that death is not the end
And you search in vain to find just one law abiding citizen
Just remember that death is not the end
Not the end, not the end
Just remember that death is not the end

– Bob Dylan, 1988

A great collection of and the released back in 98.

Some great cuts in here. However, any sort of Cave fan needs to get the various individual albums. Especially, of course, his greatest LP The Boatman’s Call.

We’ve posted a shitload of other pieces pertaining and and also Nick’s earlier group, the wild, wonderful and fucked-up .

Even some stuff from the earliest days, from the short lived,

Nick Cave is unquestionably an album artist. Each of his records has a specific mood and theme, standing as an individual work. That said, his albums have also been notoriously uneven. Sometimes, as on From Her to Eternity or The Boatman’s Call, he has delivered near-masterpieces, while on other albums, only a handful of songs have hit the mark accurately, which is why The Best of Nick Cave is a welcome addition to his catalog. Granted, the title is a bit odd (it’s better than Greatest Hits, however), but the compilation itself is as good as it could possibly be. All the major songs — “Red Right Hand,” “Straight to You,” “Nobody’s Baby Now,” “Into My Arms,” “Do You Love Me?,” “Henry Lee,” “Where the Wild Roses Grow,” “From Her to Eternity” — are on this 16-track collection, along with several strong album cuts.

Some hardcore fans will find a couple of favorites missing, and the disc should have been sequenced in chronological order, but The Best of Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds is nevertheless a terrific single-disc overview of his rewarding, occasionally inaccessible work with the Bad Seeds; it’s ideal for both the curious and the casual fan.

Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds – Stranger than Kindness

by Helenabw

Stranger than kindness
Bottled light from hotels
Spilling everything
Wet hand from the volcano
Sobers your skin
Stranger than Kindness

You caress yourself
And grind my soft cold bones below
Your map of desire
Burned in your flesh
Even a fool can come
A strange lit stair
And find a rope hanging there
Stranger than kindness

Keys rain like heaven’s hair
There is no home, there is no bread
We sit at the gate and scratch

The gaunt fruit of passion
Dies in the light
Stranger than kindness

Your sleeping hands journey
They loiter
Stranger than kindness
You hold me so carelessly close
Tell me I’m dirty
Stranger than kindness

There will always be suffering
It flows through life like water
I put my hand over her’s
Down in the lime tree arbour

This classic from 1997 is, in my view, by far the best of Cave’s albums, at once melancholic, yearning, beautiful and redemptive.

Also, importantly, there is a sense of truth and depth in the lyrics that gets lost in the archness of much of his lyrical output elsewhere.

This album speaks of lost love, pain, disappointment and distant yesterdays that survive only only in tortured memory. And it does so in a beautiful, resonant and poetic manner.

Cave’s subsequent, and indeed previous, albums, although sometimes containing moments of brilliance, unfortunately all fall short of this one.

Apparently, the females who caused such anguish to poor old Nicky, and who ‘inspired’ this exceptional work were;

  • his Brazilian ex-wife Viviane Carneiro, from whom he had then recently split (most explicitly on ‘People Ain’t No Good’ and ‘Brompton Oratory’),
  • Tori Amos (a rather incongruous pairing!) with whom he had some liaison and who apparently, as ‘Green Eyes’ relates, has a ‘twinkling cunt’ (she braided her pussy hairs, rumour has it! WTF!), and finally
  • Polly Jean Harvey (see the picture above for reasons why!… oh momma!! …) with whom there was a torrid affair which West Country Girl’ and ‘Black Hair’ speak most explicitly about.

This is what getting fucked up by a woman can do for you …. you can, if talented enough, make great art to release the demons! We see this scenario evidenced too in, amongst others, Dylan’s great ‘Blood on the Tracks’, the Stones best album ‘Exile on Main Street’ and in the only half decent album by bombastic U2 ‘Actung B’.

https://i0.wp.com/fc04.deviantart.com/fs24/f/2008/018/7/2/Boatman__s_Call_by_FeniceNera.jpg
by FeniceNera

Now I know Cave here wears his influences clearly on his sleeve (does that mean he ‘rips off’ other musicians?, I’m not sure … and I’m not sure it even matters … nothing in music, or art more broadly, is entirely, or even significantly, original).

As usual with Nick, there’s the continual strong influence at play (especially, in the stylised nature of ‘Green Eyes’).

However, foremost on this album there’s the footprint of Bob Dylan’s majestic Desirewhich too was a redemptive album by His Bobness (aka god) and a manifestation of the then current state of his relationship with estranged wife Sara, ‘Desire’ being essentially an extended love song and a kind of ‘take me back please’ plea to that beautiful lady.

Nick here basically copies Bob’s magnificent song Sarafrom Desire in ‘Where Do We Go Now but Nowhere’ – and also the song title ‘West Country Girl’ makes the Dylan influence even more obvious!

However, regardless of this, The Boatman’s Call is a supreme piece of work in its own right.

Never have Cave’s lyrics been so pared down, minimal, beautiful and poetic. Never therein have the spiritual and the profane merged and counterpointed so well (as is a hallmark of Leonard Cohen’s canon). Never has the imagery been almost haiku like in it’s beauty, simplicity and profundity.

Never has the music been so beautifully sparse and never has it meshed so consistently well with the lyric, across an entire album.

Never has there been such consistency in terms of quality and theme across one of his albums.

And never has the overall work so successfully exceeded even the sum of the magnificent individual parts!

This for sure is Cave’s meisterwerk!

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds – Lime Tree Arbour
(1997)
VIDEO & 2 Audio versions

There will always be suffering
It flows through life like water

From Cave’s greatest work The Boatman’s Call (1997) – which we’ve written extensively about HERE – the beautiful, lyrical and evocative Lime Tree Arbour.

Here we have 2 great versions – the original from The Boatman’s Call LP and a live version from a French Radio Session.

This is a truly wonderful song.

Here Cave’s lyrics are pared down, minimal, beautiful and poetic, with nice merging and counterpointing of the spiritual and the profane.

The imagery here is almost haiku like in it’s beauty, simplicity and profundity.

The music too is beautifully sparse and meshes perfectly with the lyric.

The boatman calls from the lake
A lone loon dives upon the water
I put my hand over her’s
Down in the lime tree arbour

The wind in the trees is whispering
Whispering low that I love her
She puts her hand over mine
Down in the lime tree arbour

Through every breath that I breathe
And every place I go
There is hand that protects me
And I do love her so

There will always be suffering
It flows through life like water
I put my hand over her’s
Down in the lime tree arbour

The boatman he has gone
And the loons have flown for cover
She puts her hand over mine
Down in the lime tree arbour

Through every word that I speak
And every thing I know
There is hand that protects me
And I do love her so

Anita Lane – some Great Albums

https://i1.wp.com/www.mutesong.com/store/images/anita_lane.jpg
Some great Albums from wonderful Oz songwriter and performer , who has been involved in cutting-edge and avant-garde music for almost 30 years now!

Anita was born in Melbourne, Australia in the late 1950s and began singing and writing songs at age 16. She was a classmate with Rowland S. Howard who would later from and with .

Lane became Cave’s girlfriend and moved to London with the band in 1980. She co-wrote the lyrics of three songs for The Birthday Party (“Dead Joe”, “Kiss Me Black” and “A Dead Song”) before they imploded in 1983.

https://i0.wp.com/b3.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/01030/31/04/1030214013_l.jpg

Lane is sometimes credited as a founding member of and , which was forged from the debris left behind by The Birthday Party’s demise. She had an undeniably strong influence upon Nick Cave and his work, often cited as his “muse”, although her only recorded performance with the band is a ‘cameo’ verse on the Bob Dylan cover “Death Is Not The End” from the album Murder Ballads.

https://i2.wp.com/a185.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images01/9/m_002c61f908271d05ae5ed5046f390d40.jpgShe co-wrote the lyrics of the title track to the band’s 1984 LP, From Her to Eternity, as well as the lyrics of the song “Stranger Than Kindness” from Your Funeral, My Trial. She also began to perform and record her own songs.

In the great “Ghosts… Of The Civil Dead”, soundtrack by Nick Cave, Blixa Bargeld and Mick Harvey, Anita sings on video A Prison In The Desert.

She worked with the German band Die Haut before recording Dirty Sings under her own name. She was joined on the record by Nick Cave, and Bad Seeds , Thomas Wydler, and , who produced.

With , Lane has recorded a series of albums that showcased the dichotomy between her baby doll voice and the sexual longing of her lyrics. These include a pair of albums of Serge Gainsbourg’s covers, 1995’s The Intoxicated Man and 1997’s Pink Elephants.

Harvey also produced Lane’s 1993 collection, Dirty Pearl, which compiled tracks from Lane’s work with Einstürzende Neubauten, Die Haut, as well as exclusive album tracks.

Harvey co-wrote several songs, including the UK hit single, “The World’s A Girl”. Lane’s most recent collaboration with Harvey is 2001’s Sex O’ Clock.

So we’re real happy to present some great albums from – thanks to Joe le Taxi!

We already posted some Anita stuff here.

First, Anita appears on 3 tracks on the great bootleg Tom Waits,Nick Cave and-friends

Also Anita wrote the lyrics for the English language version of “Blume” from ‘s ‘Malediction‘ album.

The first LP of her’s I heard was the wonderful LP “Black Pearl” (posted below) which was amongst the albums of the year back in 1993!

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds – From Her to Eternity

I stepped into an avalanche,

It covered up my soul;
When I am not this hunchback that you see,
I sleep beneath the golden hill.
You who wish to conquer pain,
You must learn, learn to serve me well.

We’ve posted this before. And here it is again!

We’ve got a shitload of Cave postings HERE MOFOS! Check em out!

This is the great debut album by Nick and the Seeds after the death of the Birthday Party.

The Seeds here included the acclaimed Barry Adamson of Magazine fame and great Anita Lane, Nick’s former GF but a wonderful artist in her own right who would later make some amazing LPs of her own.

This one represents a transition between the Birthday Party’s extended punk scream and what would become an ever evolving Bad Seed sound – a controlled and masterful mix of blues, swamp music, post-punk, Leonard Cohen and Bob Dylan.

A mixture of gothic blues originals with some great covers – Cohen to Presley! – this is an amazing debut!

After the Birthday Party ended in a manner similar to a train collision, frontman Nick Cave emerged from the wreckage and hooked up ex-bandmate Mick Harvey, Blixa Bargeld (on loan from the industrial group Einsturzende Neubauten), Barry Adamson (fresh from Magazine), and the lovely but corpse-pale Anita Lane.

Thus the Bad Seeds were born, second only to Cave’s former band in their ability to create a rumbling caterwaul. What makes the Bad Seeds stand apart, though, are the elements of delta blues that Cave dredges up from the darkest recesses of his black, black heart–blues unlike any you’ve ever heard before – and his Faulkner -meets -Lovecraft lyrical obsessions.

“Well of Misery” shambles along drunkenly and eventually crumbles under its somnambulant pace. On the title track Cave exhorts, begs, and pleads like a whiskey priest begging for forgiveness after a bender while Bargeld’s guitar shrieks and wails like a congregation of devils. Including two of Cave’s more inspired covers – Leonard Cohen’s “Avalanche” and Presley’s “In the Ghetto” – From Her to Eternity captures Cave at the noisy intersection between the punk-rock entropy of the Birthday Party and his later incarnation as the gothic Elvis.

Amazing, scary stuff.

This one was the second album released by Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, released in 1985.

Nick Cave took his obsession with the American South and swamp blues a little further on this LP, with influences ranging from Elvis Presley to great bluesmen like Blind Lemon Jefferson and JL Hooker.

Not my favourite Cave LP, but some decent tracks on here.

This one’s one of my favourite Cave LPs. Lots of great tracks like the seminal Mercy Seat and Deanna.
The dark, poetic troubadour tendencies hinted at in Cave’s work as early as his first album’s cover of Leonard Cohen’s “Avalance” blossom on TENDER PREY. In a style recalling Cohen and Tom Waits, Cave ups the lyrical ante considerably here. On gory detail-oriented, literate tunes like “Up Jumped the Devil” and “Mercy,” Cave’s second life as a novelist (he would soon author a book) is obvious. Here, the distance he achieves from his inner demons allows him to focus more on crafting his personal horror stories, making him seem like the Edgar Allen Poe of the rock world.

This one is magnificent. One of the greatest albums of covers ever!

This was produced to get away from the abhorrent GOTH tag that lazy journalists had consistently applied to the Seeds for years!

Very eclectic song styles on offer, some relatively obscure tracks.

Surprisingly though, no Leonard Cohen and no Bob Dylan – the two main artists who Cave has, let’s say, been heavily inspired by (and aso ripped off!)!

While Cave wore his blues influence on his sleeve on his earlier solo recordings, this covers albums goes several steps further, revealing the full range of the artist’s inspiration. While Cave does his unparalleled goth-blues thing on John Lee Hooker’s “I’m Gonna Kill That Woman,” that’s only the beginning of the story. Cave convincingly tackles predictable proto-punk fare like the Velvet Underground’s “All Tomorrow’s Parties”, but more importantly, Cave the balladeer makes his debut here.

From Jimmy Webb’s “By the Time I Get to Phoenix” to Mickey Newbury’s “Sleeping Annaleah,” Cave practices the brand of gloriously melodramatic crooning that would define his ’90s work. Accordingly, Cave’s singing began to develop here, from the crazed ranting of his early days to a more luxurious baritone. Blixa Bargeld’s guitar also plays a role of increased importance–he would prove Cave’s perfect foil for years to come.

A great return to form by Cave after a series of disappointing outings since the supreme Boatman’s Call LP.

A real case of back to fucking basics!

Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!! is the fourteenth studio album by international alternative rock band Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. The album was recorded in June and July of 2007 at The State of the Ark Studios in Richmond, London and mixed by Nick Launay at British Grove in Chiswick, and is scheduled for a March 3, 2008 release. On February 18 the title track Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!! will be released as the first single – on CD or limited edition 7″, or as a digital download, with “Accidents Will Happen” as the B-side.

It will be the second Bad Seeds studio album without Blixa Bargeld and the first to be released since the Bad Seeds side project Grinderman released their eponymous album. In several interviews Cave has stated that this album will “sound like Grinderman”, implying a garage rock sound. Whether this will be in addition to or as well as the choral and orchestral arrangements which the recent Bad Seeds albums are renowned for is unknown. The album will be accompanied by a “gigantic” tour which will not include the United States.

On the band’s official website Cave wrote on his inspiration for the album: “Ever since I can remember hearing the Lazarus story, when I was a kid, you know, back in church, I was disturbed and worried by it. Traumatized, actually. We are all, of course, in awe of the greatest of Christ’s miracles – raising a man from the dead – but I couldn’t help but wonder how Lazarus felt about it. As a child it gave me the creeps, to be honest. I’ve taken Lazarus and stuck him in New York City, in order to give the song, a hip, contemporary feel. I was also thinking about Harry Houdini who spent a lot of his life trying to debunk the spiritualists who were cashing in on the bereaved. He believed there was nothing going on beyond the grave. He was the second greatest escapologist, Harry was, Lazarus, of course, being the greatest. I wanted to create a kind of vehicle, a medium, for Houdini to speak to us if he so desires, you know, from beyond the grave.”

Tracklisting

01 – Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!! [4:12]
02 – Today’s Lesson [4:41]
03 – Moonland [3:54]
04 – Night of the lotus eaters [4:53]

This one was the first Cave album I ever bought having been mesmerized by Cave’s music in the wonderful “Wings of Desire”, from German auteur Wim Wenders.

I played this motherfucker to death, back then!

This was when Nick was in the middle of his obsession phase with John Lee Hooker, swamp music, Lenny Cohen, obscure blues and all things gothic!

Some great tracks on here that still sound amazing today.

Cave digs even deeper into his personal obsessions here than on the previous THE FIRSTBORN IS DEAD. While FIRSTBORN’s ominous bluesiness is still represented on the title track and “Long Time Man,” the balance of this album sounds decidedly more European. It was here that Cave’s Gothic troubadour persona really began to take shape. He takes the role of the grim storyteller on the album’s strongest track “The Carny” (featured to fine effect in Wim Wenders’ film WINGS OF DESIRE, in which Cave also appears as himself) and “Stranger Than Kindness.” There’s a gauzy, almost supernatural …

This one was another commercial success for Cave. I was at the Dublin gig on this tour and pretty fucking mighty it was too!

Some great tracks on here, but I’m not sure this one stood the test of time though.

It has been reported that Cave himself hates Henry’s Dream. While it is deeply flawed, especially by Cave’s formidable standards, he’s being unnecessarily hard on himself. Aside from any other considerations, it contains “Papa Won’t Leave You, Henry”, a rumbling gospel epic that remains a highlight of Bad Seeds live shows, and “Straight To You”, an exquisite devotional ballad.

It is an odd album, however. Just when its predecessor, The Good Son, seemed to hint that Cave had accepted his natural facility for the heroically overwrought ballad, Henry’s Dream was a partial return to the gloomy, old testament portents of “Your Funeral My Trial” and “First Born Is Dead”. There was no real problem with this–“Christina The Astonishing” and “Brother My Cup Is Empty” are especially fine–but it leaves Henry’s Dream as a whole feeling rather like it is two halves of two separate, half-finished albums.

-Andrew Mueller

HENRY’S DREAM is perhaps the most fully realised of all Cave’s albums. On it, he achieves the perfect balance between his lush, poetic sensibilities and his feral, unfettered rock& roll id. Most of the guitar work is acoustic, but there’sno lack of momentum as the band drives harder than ever. Cave’s grisly Cohenesque lyric talents are at their peak here. Each song is like a short horror story, or a rock equivalent of Rod Serling’s NIGHT GALLERY.

The unrelentingly gruesome imagery of tunes like “Papa Won’t Leave You Henry” is hammered home even further by the pounding arrangements. Even when things settle down, as on the folkie ballad “Loom of the Land”, there’s a barely veiled undercurrent of danger in the air. HENRY’S DREAM is full of some of Cave’s finest songcraft, making a case for him as the gloomy bard of ’90s alt-rock.

This one was Cave’s breakthrough album. His most accessible. Got lots of airplay on yuppy radio and lots of yups bought the LP!

Some great songs on here though.

As I recall, The Ship Song was voted the greatest Australian song of all time! Dunno about that. But it’s a billion zillion fucking times better than Land Down Under!

THE GOOD SON reflected a change in both Cave’s art and his life. At the end of the ’80s, he moved to Brazil, to distance himself from the drug-addled frenzy of his youth. His search for peace is plainly audible in these songs, which pick up where the most melodic tunes on TENDER PREY left off. Laced with piano, vibraphone and choral backing vocals, songs such as “Foi Na Cruz” and “Lucy” unveil Cave the unabashed romantic, willing to go as far over the top as necessary to prove his emotional commitment to the material. It is this quality that finally puts him on an even keel with the balladeers whose influence he bears so strongly (Scott Walker, Leonard Cohen, etc.).

Despite the lush arrangements, it’s not all sweetness and light. Pretty melodies mask untold grief on “The Weeping Song” and “Sorrow’s Child.” A near-religious transcendence is approached on “The Witness Song.” THE GOOD SON is a strange, lovely diversion in the varied career of this complex artist.

Nick Cave – And The Ass Saw The Angel CD

Nick Cave – And The Ass Saw The Angel
Alternative/Spoken Word/2000 / MP3 160kbps / 56MB

And the ass saw the angel of the LORD standing in the way, and his sword drawn in his hand: and the ass turned aside out of the way, and went into the field: and Balaam smote the ass, to turn her into the way.

– Numbers 22

This is a CD comprised of readings and music by Nick Cave and theatre music composed and performed by Mick Harvey and Ed Clayton-Jones.

https://i0.wp.com/www.jamesgalvin.net/images/ass_saw_the_angel.jpgThe readings are from Cave’s excellent 1988 novel ‘And The Ass Saw The Angel’.

I remember reading the novel years ago, and it was very impressive, a very strange gothic mix like a scary orgy involving Flannery O’ Connor, William Faulkner, a few swamps, three-fingered crosseyed banjo players, Luis Bunuel, a trough of moonshine and a mound of dodgy LSD!

I just see on the cover of the new edition that it was recommended by Elle! What the fuck! Are you sure someone from Elle ever heard about the book let alone read it! I mean it’s not exactly an Oprah Winfrey Book of the Week type of offering!!

The previously unreleased theatre music was commisioned for a theatrical adaption of the book.
