WINTERS OF DISCONTENT: THE PEEL SESSIONS 77-83 (1991) [Various Artists]

WINTERS OF DISCONTENT: THE PEEL SESSIONS 77-83 (1991) [Various Artists]

A stunning find this, from the great isupplythecountrywithbutter

A very rare, out of print collection of great Peel tracks from more great bands than you could shake Sarah Palin at!

I mean it’s even got the wonderful cult Irish group Microdisney for fucks sake!

And it’s got one of my favourite songs of all time, The Only Ones’ sublime punk pop classic Another Girl Another Planet!

I officially am in love with this amazing album!

isupplythecountrywithbutter says;

Absolutely and ridiculously great collection of nearly every important Post-Punk band you can think of, live at Maida Vale studios. Yep, all of these recordings were radio sessions for the late, great DJ, John Peel. To name just a few of the artists featured, how about Buzzcocks, The Skids, The Ruts, The Birthday Party, Young Marble Giants, The Redskins, Associates, The Chameleons and many, many more. As you already know, John Peel wanted each artist to feel comfortable and to experiment. Bands tended to stretch out a bit, relax and have fun. These sessions prove this to be the case. 25 tracks, all of them Fan-Fucking-Tastic.

Enjoy!

I ripped this from the original and very out-of-print CD at 192.

Tracklisting

The Stranglers – Something Better Change
Siouxsie And The Banshees – Love In A Void

Anita Lane – some Great Albums

https://i1.wp.com/www.mutesong.com/store/images/anita_lane.jpg
Some great Albums from wonderful Oz songwriter and performer , who has been involved in cutting-edge and avant-garde music for almost 30 years now!

Anita was born in Melbourne, Australia in the late 1950s and began singing and writing songs at age 16. She was a classmate with Rowland S. Howard who would later from and with .

Lane became Cave’s girlfriend and moved to London with the band in 1980. She co-wrote the lyrics of three songs for The Birthday Party (“Dead Joe”, “Kiss Me Black” and “A Dead Song”) before they imploded in 1983.

https://i0.wp.com/b3.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/01030/31/04/1030214013_l.jpg

Lane is sometimes credited as a founding member of and , which was forged from the debris left behind by The Birthday Party’s demise. She had an undeniably strong influence upon Nick Cave and his work, often cited as his “muse”, although her only recorded performance with the band is a ‘cameo’ verse on the Bob Dylan cover “Death Is Not The End” from the album Murder Ballads.

https://i2.wp.com/a185.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images01/9/m_002c61f908271d05ae5ed5046f390d40.jpgShe co-wrote the lyrics of the title track to the band’s 1984 LP, From Her to Eternity, as well as the lyrics of the song “Stranger Than Kindness” from Your Funeral, My Trial. She also began to perform and record her own songs.

In the great “Ghosts… Of The Civil Dead”, soundtrack by Nick Cave, Blixa Bargeld and Mick Harvey, Anita sings on video A Prison In The Desert.

She worked with the German band Die Haut before recording Dirty Sings under her own name. She was joined on the record by Nick Cave, and Bad Seeds , Thomas Wydler, and , who produced.

With , Lane has recorded a series of albums that showcased the dichotomy between her baby doll voice and the sexual longing of her lyrics. These include a pair of albums of Serge Gainsbourg’s covers, 1995’s The Intoxicated Man and 1997’s Pink Elephants.

Harvey also produced Lane’s 1993 collection, Dirty Pearl, which compiled tracks from Lane’s work with Einstürzende Neubauten, Die Haut, as well as exclusive album tracks.

Harvey co-wrote several songs, including the UK hit single, “The World’s A Girl”. Lane’s most recent collaboration with Harvey is 2001’s Sex O’ Clock.

So we’re real happy to present some great albums from – thanks to Joe le Taxi!

We already posted some Anita stuff here.

First, Anita appears on 3 tracks on the great bootleg Tom Waits,Nick Cave and-friends

Also Anita wrote the lyrics for the English language version of “Blume” from ‘s ‘Malediction‘ album.

https://i1.wp.com/www.mutesong.com/store/images/anita_lane.jpg
The first LP of her’s I heard was the wonderful LP “Black Pearl” (posted below) which was amongst the albums of the year back in 1993!

Contained therein was the wonderful song “Blume

The Birthday Party & Lydia Lunch – Drunk On The Pope’s Blood

Album : Drunk On The Pope’ Blood
Artist : The Birthday Party & Lydia Lunch
Release Date : 1982
Genre : Punk-Rock
Total time : 00:24:03
Total size : 33,1 MB
mp3@192 Kbit/s
So much mumbo-jumbo’s been made of adolescent art, of pop or rock voicing the vainglorious views of each new generation, washing the sins of the fathers (and mothers) from the hands of the kids, that it’s long been forgotten that the real truth lies in tantrum.

Most lucrative noise is – and always has been – made by (non) musicians old enough to know better, but never prepared to admit or accept it. It’s not a well-aimed kick against growing up and its values, but a blind sulk and shout about already being there. Pop is a toddler’s plea for selfish attention, a “me, me, me, me” not an “I told you so”. It’s mean and it’s meaningless. And that’s its great beauty.

The Birthday Party, more than most, appreciate the perverse practicality of making a row. They’re obnoxious, so much so that they piss people off. Not only the cliched old fuddy-duddies and traditional church wardens, but also the hipsters and boffins who fawn and dote over pop flash and fact.

The Birthday Party are awful. Subversively awful. Awfully great. Awesomely brilliant. “Drunk On The Pope’s Blood” is their second really BAD long-playing record. Recorded live at the Venue, it struggles – in vain – to capture and/or castrate the ranting confrontation of their stage act. “Get involved … say something!” Nick Cave screams while Beefheart is brutally butchered behind.

Back beyond basics, this is what punk ought to be like – angry and futile with nothing to say and barely the words to express it. The critics turn pop into protest because that gives it a comforting logic, an aim and direction that renders it open to sane comprehension. Sheer bloody-minded pointlessness is too mad and too menacing.

The Birthday Party are violently pointless. That’s why they’re important. Their “16 minutes of sheer hell” is all ugly feedback. Unlistenably listenable. Love it to death.

Lydia Lunch’s unpleasant squawking on the other side is even more potent. I hate it. It neither exasperates nor elevates. It irritates. And that, or course, is exactly the point.

Ah art! Don’t you just love it?

The Birthday Party – Junkyard (1982 )

Album : Junkyard
Artist : The Birthday Party
Release Date : 1982
Genre : Punk-Rock
Total time : 00:47:00
Total size : 64,7 MB
@ 192 Kbit/s mp3

This is the Birthday Party’s second official album (their first, Australian-only, release was put out under both the Birthday Party moniker and their old name Boys Next Door).

The unbridled fury of Junkyard’s predecessor Prayers on Fire is subdued here, but the guitars’ sinister scraping whine and Nick Cave’s demon-possessed, beat-poet vocals create a deliciously unnerving din nevertheless.

“Big Jesus Trash-Can” comes off like an amphetamine-crazed, post-punk version of the Doors’ “W.A.S.P. (Texas Radio & the Big Beat),” while Cave’s ranting on the almost jazzy “Release the Bats” suggests an unholy confluence of Count Dracula, Elvis Presley, and Johnny Rotten.

Throughout the album, the Birthday Party grinds no-wave guitar, free-jazz craziness, and punk-processed Captain Beefheart angularity in their own twisted blender.

Evolution is hinted at by the presence of several less chaotic tracks that exploit the kind of horror-movie swamp-blues that would typify the group’s final recordings, and Cave’s early solo effort.

The Birthday Party – Prayers On Fire (1981)

Album : Prayers On Fire
Artist : The Birthday Party
Release Date : 1981
Genre : Punk-Rock
Total time : 00:41:39
Total size : 57,3 MB

Nick Cave is widely acknowledged as one of the most mature songwriting talents around, these days. However, there was a time when he seemed to be the most unhinged soul in Christendom!

The Birthday Party’s performances, whether in the studio or on stage, were always compelling, and they left behind no more powerful document than this shattering record.

Prayers On Fire, an intense, disquieting effort, was their first international release after relocating to London from Australia.

While the violence of the group’s urban rockabilly rumbles underneath, often to no obvious linear structure, Cave’s lyrics are informed, acute, but utterly unyielding and savage. Check the no-compromise ferocity of “Nick The Stripper” and “King Ink”, still among his best songs.

Having relocated, after one album, from their native Australia to England, The Birthday Party proved too much even for a post-punk London scene greedy for novelty. Led by drawn, gangling vocalist Nick Cave and addled, introspective guitarist Roland S. Howard, they set about provoking their audience with a brutal mix of rabid psychobilly, country blues and an ear-splitting mess of near-industrial percussion.

Prayers On Fire (its title neatly capturing Cave’s onstage persona–a hell-spawned and gothic Deep South preacherman) was as incendiary as the band’s gigs. Though an aggravating shambles, it was hypnotically intense, featuring such deliberately barbarous live favourites as “Zoo Music Girl” and “Nick The Stripper”, and also “King Ink”, later the title of one of Cave’s books. Poetic, violent and clearly drug fuelled, even today it explains the furore that led The Birthday Party to quickly move on to Berlin, then split altogether

Nick The Stripper :

The Birthday Party’s first ‘proper’ album (released in 1981, it was preceded by an eponymously-titled collection of EPs and singles) is a bona-fide rock classic. Although many critics prefer its successor, Junk Yard, for me Prayers on Fire has the edge, largely because of the inclusion of the terrifying Zoo Music Girl and King Ink.

Although the band’s arty, jazz-influenced sound was startlingly original, Cave’s demented screaming and taste for self-degradation ( e.g. Figure of Fun, Nick The Stripper) recall Iggy Pop in his prime with The Stooges. As is the way with great talents, Cave built intelligently on rock’s history and heritage without seeming merely derivative, and in so doing, produced a record that still sounds fresh and original after two decades. An essential purchase!

When this album landed in Britland, it was hard to believe that something so right had suddenly splashed down amidst some of the worst music being commited in the UK!

It was post-punk time and everyone seemed to be self conscious and austere, no show of emotions! Then,BAM! Prayers On Fire arrived like a drunken Uncle at a family barbecue.!

One listen to Zoo Music Girl, the opening track ,will set up the onslaught to come .. Superb baby-Burundi drumming with a boiling brutal bass sat atop itchy-scratchy guitars wading in through separate channels and then the booming tone of Mr. Cave arrives, his lyrics a cut-up psychobabble of animal lust and cradled desire! And its got a singalong chorus too! What ese could you fucking want! It ends with a faded out trumpet the band still burning underneath.

A brief rest and then a great drum and bass motif usher us into ‘Cry’ – which features a slightly more subdued Cave until the chorus rips the top of your skull off!

The power in this band is luckily captured forever on this album as they had yet to begin the transition toward their own take on world weary blues with the drummer, Phil Calvert, taking a backseat more often than not.

Their pop-punk-new wave influences are still apparent on many tracks amongst the occasional displays of silliness (Capers), the autobiographical confessions (Nick The Stripper) and the near perfect rock (King Ink).

At the heart of all this is a band at the top of its awesome power about to look inside itself and piece by piece, hack itself slowly apart!

The Boys Next Door (Nick Cave et al) – Door, Door

Album : Door, Door
Artist : The Boys Next Door
Release Date : 1978
Genre : Punk-Rock
Total time : 00:31:57
Total size : 44 MB
@ 192 Kbit/s mp3

If one compares “Door, Door” to later albums made by these soon-to-be-infamous Aussies — albums released under the Birthday Party moniker — it sounds fairly tame and relatively straightforward.

But that’s not to say there’s anything wrong with it. In fact, it’s a frantic, edgy, and surprisingly catchy piece of post-punk mayhem; just don’t expect anything as original or downright disturbing as “Big-Jesus-Trash-Can” or “Zoo-Music Girl.”

The album starts out in high gear with “The Nightwatchman,” replete with ringing guitar figures, a boppy punk-pop chorus (yes, those are “ooh-ooh-ooh-oohs” you’re hearing), and dirty sax lines. Sax pops up on “Brave Exhibitions” as well, providing a meaty partner to the lead guitar on circular, descending scales that bring some weirdness to a straight-up rocker.

Things begin to get slightly more strange and troubled as the record plays on: “The Voice” and “Somebody’s Watching” are filled with a paranoid mania and creepy, memorable musical phrases that make them two of “Door, Door”‘s highlights. (The lead guitar parts in the latter song make it seem as if Rowland Howard spent time listening to Television at the wrong speed).

And “Roman Roman” is a frenzied schoolyard chant that hints at some of the anarchic pandemonium the group could create on-stage.

It’s impressive how, even at this early stage, Nick Cave was a confident and unique singer, perfectly aware of the strengths and limitations of his voice; although he’s not much for range, he knows how to come across in a scary and theatrical manner that perfectly complements the music. Nowhere is this more apparent than on the band’s closing, mournful ballad, “Shivers,” an unashamedly melodramatic example of post-adolescent anguish.
