The Lemonheads – It’s a Shame About Ray ; Collector’s Edition [Collector’s Edition]

It’s a Shame About Ray

[COLLECTOR’S EDITION]
March 25, 2008

Smile at me,
I’ll hold you really tight,
Follow you into bed

Every indie kid and his dog had this one back in 1992. I had it. So did my dog ‘smack’!

I really liked most of the album really a lot. Smack loved it too.

Evan and his cohorts sure did make some great pop music!
Some classic moments on this album, no doubt. Ironically, they had a fluky hit with the worst track of the album – a cover of the awful Mrs. Robinson!

Apparently, soon after this album, lil Evan did a lot dumb things like becoming a crack addict and hanging with those awful cretins Oasis!

https://i0.wp.com/www.scenepointblank.com/features/evandando1.jpgWorse, he allegedly later started banging professional widow, and silicone hag, Courtney Love! How much crack would that take?!

I remember seeing some interview with him around that time and he kinda reminded me of the Bowie character in “The Man who fell to Earth”. Totally spaced out and fucked up!

His songwriting never again reached the sustained heights of It’s a Shame About Ray.

Maybe this will change soon though! Yes, the band have reformed and are currently in the pre-production stages of the recording of their next album, which is due for release in 2008.

This is an enhanced version of the It’s a Shame About Ray album with a shitload of extra tracks – demos etc. Don’t worry, Oasis or Courtney are nowhere to be seen!

A few reviews of the original album from Brit music rags;

-Melody Maker

Dando is at last emphatically his own man – and the results fall barely short of the miraculous.

-NME

The Lemonheads formed in Boston in the late 80s and had their major label debut on Atlantic in 1990 with Lovey. It was 1992’s IT S A SHAME ABOUT RAY, though, that proved to be their breakthrough success. Critical and fan acclaim surged for the album, which centered on lead singer/songwriter Evan Dando’s melodic, left-of-center alt-rock artistry.

His warm, resonant vocals and brilliant pop sensibilities often belied insurgent lyrics, a quality that runs throughout the title track a #5 Billboardmodern rock chart hit and the album’s other stand-outs, including My Drug Buddy, Allison s Starting To Happen, Confetti, and the band’s hit, punk-skewed cover of Mrs. Robinson.

On this new 2-disc, CD+DVD COLLECTOR’S EDITION, the original album plus ten bonus tracks comprise Disc 1. The DVD features 45 minutes of content including videos and commentary from Dando.
