Papa M – Whatever, Mortal (2001)

Papa M – Whatever, Mortal (2001)

These days it seems the low-fi guitar channels are jammed full of multiple-monikered American talent. Papa M is Dave Pajo, one-time Tortoise experimentalist and guitarist with revered Louisville noise-peddlars Slint.

‘Whatever, Mortal’ sees Pajospringboard from his days of compositional craziness into a pool of muted, gentle tones.

‘Over Jordan’ lulls us into mellow territory before upping the tempo on ‘Belloved Woman’. ‘Roses In The Snow’ and ‘Sarah Jane’ are classic country ballads with a twist.

The amazing ‘Many Splendored Thing’ is a beguiling ode to love, with its melancholic harmonies. ‘Glad You’re Here With Me’ is a plea to a disgruntled lover underpinned by a soft combination of guitar and melodica.

The great eccentric, Will Oldham co-produced this album and his influence is palpable throughout. ‘Whatever, Mortal’ discards the dark broth of Bonnie Prince Billy in favour of a warm, seductive brew.

Pajo draws on his diverse musical background to create a wonderful collection of taut, fragile tunes.

Reviews for this were positively ecstatic!

  • Uncut (1/03, p.97) – Ranked #51 in Uncut’s “100 Best Albums of the Year”
  • Alternative Press (2/02, p.78) – 7 out of 10 – “… A memorable slice of psychedelic country that never disappoints…”
  • Mojo (Publisher) (1/03, p.75) – Ranked #24 in Mojo’s “Best Albums of 2002”
  • Mojo (Publisher) (2/02, p.97) – “…Excellent…”
  • NME (Magazine) (2/23/02, p.35) – 8 out of 10 – “…It’s wild and uneven stuff, and as Pajo dips his finger into the darker corners of folk music, he’s leaving the normal world far behind. For the few, the brave and the geeky, this is a thing of monstrous beauty…”

Tortoise – Discography

https://i1.wp.com/www.abc.net.au/triplej/jfiles/files/img/tortoise.jpgTortoise – Discography
Post-rock/Jazz/Ambient | MP3 @ ~192kbps | RS.com | 764mb, split per album

A collection of albums by Tortoise from Chicago as posted by UKRuss.

Some wonderful moments from this great genre-splicing and uber-influential supergroup, featuring members from Sea and Cake, and Cocktails.

It took me a while to realise their brilliance and to overcome my guitar-rock prejudice! But they were worth the wait!

Tortoise’s almost entirely instrumental music defies easy categorization, and the group gained significant attention from their early career, having formed in Chicago in 1990.
The members have roots in Chicago’s fertile music scene, playing in various indie rock and punk groups. Tortoise was among the first American indie rock bands to incorporate styles closer to Krautrock, dub, minimalism, electronica, and various jazz styles, rather than the standard rock and roll and punk that had dominated indie rock for years.

Some have cited Tortoise as being one of the prime forces behind the development and popularity of the so-called “post-rock” movement.

It’s almost impossible to pick one album up as the best one, but perhaps”Millions Living..” as it was their real breakthrough (after a fashion!) album and the one which made them known to me.

Discography

  • Tortoise (1994)
  • Millions Now Living Will Never Die (1996)
  • TNT (1998)
  • In the Fishtank (1999) EP, collaboration with The Ex
  • Standards (2001)
  • It’s All Around You (2004)
  • The Brave and the Bold (2006) – covers album, collaboration with Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy
  • A Lazarus Taxon (2006) – compilation box-set of rare material, 3 CDs and 1 DVD

The group’s origins lie in the late 1980’s pairing of Doug McCombs and John Herndon, who imagined themselves as a freelance rhythm section. That idea never saw fruition, but their interest in grooving rhythms and recording studio trickery led to partnerships with drummer John McEntire and bassist Bundy K. Brown (both formerly of Bastro) joining, followed by Dan Bitney. Though songs are credited to all the musicians, McEntire quickly became perceived as, if not the acknowledged leader, then the group’s guiding force. In reality his extra contributions mainly took the form of being the recording engineer and mixer.

https://i1.wp.com/slimages.macys.com/is/image/MCY/products/4/optimized/19134_fpx.tifTheir first single was issued in 1993, and their self-titled debut album followed a year later. Instrumental and mostly mid-tempo, Tortoise slowly garnered praise and attention, due in part to the unusual instrumentation (two bass guitars, three percussionists switching between drums, vibraphones and marimbas).

Brown left and was replaced by David Pajo (formerly of Slint, who offered Tortoise’s first recorded guitar) for 1996’s Millions Now Living Will Never Die, which showed up on many year-end best of lists, and the 20 minute Djed was described by critic John Bush as proof that “Tortoise made experimental rock do double duty as evocative, beautiful music.”

In 1998, Tortoise released TNT, arguably their most jazz-inflected album. Pajo had been replaced by Jeff Parker, who has a strong jazz background. 2001 led to Standards, where Tortoise incorporated more electronic sounds and post-production into its music than in previous works.

2004 saw the release of It’s All Around You, and in 2006 they collaborated with Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy on an album of covers entitled The Brave and the Bold.

In 2006 they also released A Lazarus Taxon, a box set containing two CDs of single tracks and remixes, a third CD with an expanded Rhythms, Resolutions and Clusters (long out of print), and a DVD of videos and film of live performances.
