Chinese photographer YANG Yong

by YANG Yong
Born 1975 in Sichuan province

In two decades the booming new city of Shenzhen, near Hong Kong, has grown from a small seaside town to a metropolis with about eight million inhabitants and an average age of 25. This ‘Shenzhen generation’ has created a distinctive new Chinese youth culture that avidly embraces consumerism, fashion and the mass media.

Mixing reality and fiction, Yang Yong’s photographs capture the surface glamour of this prosperous city as well as its darker side.
